Description

The Truth About Edith is played over Zoom with a live gamemaster and a live actor. However, it is not played via an avatar in a real-life escape room. Our job was to investigate a strange woman. We followed clues to different bepuzzled websites, and encountered a couple of different characters over video call.

The Truth About Edith was a delightful mixture of escape room / immersive experience / party game. To explain the storyline would be to spoil the fun. So I will simply say that this is an escape game that employs the use of a live actor in addition to digital elements. Oh man, did we have fun with that actor! Any escape room experience that involves me singing an Abba song (much to David’s bewilderment) is aces in my book.

The Truth About Edith leaned into its virtual world. The actors in this experience were nothing short of adorable, and brought depth to characters we only had the pleasure of interacting with for an hour. At some times, like in a traditional escape room, one could feel unsure about the next direction to go in; I liked these momentary pauses as they felt true to the premise of the game. I experienced technical difficulties with one puzzle, but as I don’t solve all the puzzles in any real-life escape room, I was ok with missing out on one solve, and I jumped forward to rejoin my team quickly thereafter. Regardless of whether you’re a cat lover, or know that dogs are the best, The Truth About Edith is worth a play.

The Truth About Edith hit all the high notes for me: engaging and humorous narrative, great interfaces that worked smoothly, and really fun collaborative puzzles. The story line was clever and fully integrated into every aspect of the experience. The custom-created websites and game interfaces were well designed and user-friendly. While the puzzles were on the easy side, many of them required all 4 of us players to coordinate individually controlled aspects, which was very fun. There was a live actor as well as a live gamemaster. I would have enjoyed having the live actor be a more integral part of the experience as a whole, but the interactions we had with her were still very enjoyable.

The Truth About Edith was chock full of energy and purr-sonality. The game was portrayed through multiple different platforms and interactions. The unique combination of web interfaces and Zoom character interactions made the adventure loads of fun. The coolest part of the game – that I have yet to see in any other experience – was that every player had their own individual tasks and it could not be played without 4 separate players, each on their own devices. Each challenge brought fun and laughter to the team, which was definitely well needed. This experience was fur-real awesome!

More of this please. The Truth About Edith blended team-based puzzles with quirky challenges, digital interfaces, and a bit of livesteam acting… and it was fantastic.

Mad Genius Escape Co. embraced the strengths and minimized the weaknesses of online play with so much grace and humor. I didn’t know how badly I needed this game in my quarantine, and I haven’t stopped recommending it since I played it.

  1. We played yesterday with my family – wife, child of 14, and child of 11. We had a blast. It forced us to not just collaborate throughout but assigned us unique roles so we each had incomplete information that we needed to collectively make sense of, often in unusual and unexpected ways. Also it had puzzles where EACH of us had to solve it, on our own, and we couldn’t proceed until all were completed, keeping us all engaged throughout, which was unusual (no hanging back and letting others do the work). Many smart and inventive puzzles, with a great integration of internet technology. High recommended!

    1. This is great to hear! We’re so glad you enjoyed this game. It’s one of our favorites 🙂
