If you’ve been to any corporate headquarters, you’ve probably seen exhibits in the lobby displaying information about the company’s history or products. This is what we saw as we entered the home office of the Bureau of Sequential Time & Anomalies (BSTA) time travel agency. Though it was only our first day of training as Time Travel Agents, things had already gone awry. One of the interns was missing, and we needed to find them… somewhere in time.

The large, colorful space contained a variety of components, ciphers and unusual mechanisms, used by the missing intern to create a series of puzzle challenges. We needed to solve these puzzles to reactivate the Time Machine and start our search for the intern. A numbering system directed us to various puzzling stations around the room. Some of the puzzles were simple and straightforward, but the most interesting ones incorporated historically accurate ciphers in the solves, which were fun to read about and apply to our situation. However, wear and tear on some of the props detracted from the experience. Though our team was kept engaged most of the time, game flow became a bit unbalanced towards the end, when part of the team was left with little to do.
The Time Travelers was the first game in what is planned to be a whopping 10-game multi-episode story arc to continue the BTSA time travel theme. We played their second experience, Blast from the Past, which brought us to Pompeii in 79 A.D. and was a step up in game flow and set design. The team at Baker Street Escapes put a lot of imagination into their homegrown sets and time-travel stories, and we look forward to seeing where the BSTA storyline goes next.

Story
We were the newest Time Travel Agents at the Bureau of Sequential Time & Anomalies (BSTA), but our first day of training was cut short when a mishap with the time machine caused an intern to disappear. With no one else available, we were asked to look through the BSTA displays and find a way to fix the Time Machine and search for the intern.

Setting
Most of the game took place in the BSTA headquarters, a large space with colorful walls and curious displays and mechanisms. Informative signs explained the history and significance of the items on display, not unlike a museum.

Gameplay
Baker Street Escapes’ The Time Travelers was a standard escape room with a moderate level of difficulty.
Gameplay centered around working with ciphers, observation, making connections, and puzzling.
Analysis
➕ The introduction was humorous and creatively executed, and used a technique we recognized from a familiar action movie that had us smiling in the first few moments.
➕ There was a nice variety of puzzles that included physical and logical challenges and beyond. Some puzzles used authentic code-cracking techniques that were fun to figure out. Feedback made us aware that we’d reached the right solution.
➖ Several early puzzle components showed significant wear, with one prop breaking while in use. Though it didn’t prevent us from solving the puzzle, it took away from the look and feel of the experience.
➕ Signs around the displays contained detailed descriptions and historical references that were interesting and gave a sense of realism to the experience. The history buff on our team was in his element!
➖ The Time Machine itself was underwhelming. There was an opportunity to use special effects and decor to make what should be a highpoint into something more than it was.
➖ The ending was abrupt and left us uncertain if we had achieved our goal. And while we were given a possible connection to the next game in the story arc, it felt incomplete. We would have liked to see a more dramatic, cliffhanger ending.
🛂 A nifty passport lets players track their progress through the various BSTA experiences.
