Whereas Studio Escape’s Shadow Zen was a tribute to local Japanese culture, For Queen & Country was an exhilarating spy thriller honouring the creators’ British backgrounds. Filled with espionage and cheeky humor, this experience properly placed us in an action-packed Bond film.
For Queen & Country looked amazing and flowed perfectly. It not only nailed the visual aesthetics, but also managed to elegantly justify the “why” behind each of our interactions. These were not just spy-themed puzzles; every puzzle directly advanced the story. While this gameplay style was on the easier side, especially for Japan, it contained multiple innovative mechanics and alluring cinematic techniques. It successfully prioritized fun throughout.
The experience started at the door. Each of Studio Escape’s games has a dedicated lobby space, and the lobby of For Queen & Country was wonderfully themed for the genre. More than just a waiting area, it opened the magic circle and organically eased us into the elaborate world that Studio Escape had created.

I was particularly impressed by the transitions throughout For Queen & Country. Our adventure included a compelling sense of spatial progression and character presence, all within an efficient footprint and without the use of in-room actors. We also encountered physical transformations within certain scenes that allowed the experience to reach unexpected heights. From subtle detailing to wild plot twists, the environmental storytelling was off the charts.
For new and experienced players alike, Studio Escape is an escape room company worth traveling to visit. Each of their games is characterized by polish, precision, and impeccable editing. Moreover, each game lives in a different genre and embodies the best possible version of that style. While Shadow Zen is the most talked about on the international stage, it would be a travesty to miss any one of Studio Escape’s masterful creations.
