“K.O.N.G. Protocol was the ultimate escape room action-thriller. With a stunning set, brilliant cutscenes, creative gameplay, and a jaw-dropping density of ‘holy shit’ moments, this blockbuster experience truly had it all.”
REA Reaction
Escape Barcelona has been building big and bold for many years, and K.O.N.G. Protocol might just be their most impressive creation yet.
When an escape experience decides to shoot for the stars, they must commit to the high level they set for themselves from start to finish. Amazingly, we encountered no dips throughout K.O.N.G. Protocol. The remarkably detailed set design, creative actor interactions, video game-inspired gameplay, and unforgettable effects were consistently world class in each and every scene. Any one of the “wow” moments in this game could have made it a crowd favorite, and yet Escape Barcelona generously just kept piling these moments on.
I was perhaps most in awe of the emotional range and depth in K.O.N.G. Protocol. While much of the experience kept our hearts racing, we also encountered moments of humor, levity, and connection, offsetting and providing context for the segments of anticipation, dread, and confrontation.

An increasing number of top Barcelona escape rooms include some version of a “final boss battle” — including others at Escape Barcelona — and it was clear that Escape Barcelona learned from these other experiences and concocted an epic sequence that’s going to be hard for anyone to top anytime soon. But they didn’t end there. While too many escape rooms end on the climax, K.O.N.G. Protocol properly ended their story with a segment of falling action which provided space for the climax to breath and all the narrative threads to settle, all while we were still fully immersed in the world.
K.O.N.G. Protocol is the most ambitious and most polished offering to date from Escape Barcelona, yet whether you prefer K.O.N.G. Protocol or Cybercity 2049 will largely come down to thematic preference. Both experiences are world-class blockbusters that would individually be worth traveling just about any distance to play, and together, they make Escape Barcelona a destination amongst destinations.

Story
We paid a visit to an abandoned park where a mysterious corporation had been carrying out terrible experiments in making mutant creatures.

Setting
K.O.N.G. Protocol took place in a mutant creature research facility. The environment was dark, detailed, brooding — and absolutely massive. Throughout, various angular, industrial settings had been partially reclaimed by time and nature.
Gameplay
Escape Barcelona’s K.O.N.G. Protocol was a cinematic escape room with a moderate level of difficulty.
Core gameplay revolved around solving puzzles, searching, and interacting with mutant creatures.
Analysis
➕ From the moment we entered the building, K.O.N.G. Protocol succeeded in building tension and telling a cohesive narrative. More thriller than horror, this epic adventure maintained its energy throughout, balancing adrenaline-pumping action sequences with elements of humor and playfulness. It felt like a real-life video game, with top-notch environmental storytelling and creative physical exploration.
➕ The set design in K.O.N.G. Protocol was big, bold, and beautiful. There was a jaw-dropping level of detail and polish.
➕ Perfectly balanced lighting and music elevated the energy of each and every scene.
➕/➖ K.O.N.G. Protocol was a living, breathing world filled with various mutant experiments. Parts of the experience were scary, but I also found them to be quite approachable, especially since Escape Barcelona established clear rules of engagement and stuck to them. The exception was an interesting game mechanic which came into play once, but then strangely seemed to be ignored after that.
➕ Escape Barcelona designed fun and varied gameplay that used the environment well and consistently provided plenty to do for a medium-sized team. Many puzzles and interactions felt inspired by classic video game styles.
➖ It was difficult to distinguish between colors for one puzzle. There existed an additional light source that would have helped, but the switch was a bit too well hidden in the moment.
➕/❓ We adored a sequence of playful connection that humanized the core premise of the experience and helped to counterbalance the constant threat of mutant attack. If anything, I wish that this had become a recurring motif throughout the gameplay rather than just a one-off scene.
➕ An unforgettable transition between worlds flowed remarkably well.
➕/➖ A satisfying sequence of puzzles required collaborative problem solving. They had a nice progression, though some of the later levels could have benefited from clearer feedback.
➕ The finale upped the scale and the stakes. Brilliantly executed and paced, this was the most effective boss battle I’ve seen in any escape room in the English-speaking world, clearly building on and learning from multiple similar counterparts in the local Barcelona escape room scene. Critically, the game did not end there on the climax, instead presenting us with some falling action that tied together the story and our choices within it.
➕/➖ K.O.N.G. Protocol contained a number of decision points, both active and passive, which factored into our end state. I found the implementation of this approach to be overall much more effective in K.O.N.G. Protocol than in Escape Barcelona’s previous experiences, and I appreciated the creative storytelling approach, along with a video game-esque achievement system. However, there were still a few moments in the gameplay where we were left confused by whether we’d fully solved a puzzle with multiple mutually exclusive paths. By creating more narratively-grounded stakes and making it clear when we were making a choice, Escape Barcelona could both improve the game flow and also make our personal ending even more meaningful.
