Proyecto Omega was a passionate tribute to superhero fandoms. This was also one of the most polished and well-rounded escape rooms I’ve encountered in the greater Barcelona area, balancing beautiful sets and impressive effects with puzzles that were creative, satisfying, and original.

Although our roles within Proyecto Omega were not that of superheroes — we were just there to help the heroes out of a tough situation — we still encountered numerous interactions and transitions that made us feel like badass heroes. The gameplay consistently placed its players in the center of the action.

Moreover, the coolest elements of the experience were all meaningfully designed around the gameplay, and multiple spaces were cleverly designed around unique puzzle structures. We didn’t only see cool things, but we got to interact with them in cool and sometimes unexpected ways.

Superfans of superheroes will particularly appreciate the patchwork of references throughout Proyecto Omega, but the game was fully accessible even to players with just a passing pop culture awareness. Layering on top of all the Easter eggs, Proyecto Omega told its own original and engaging story.

In planning my second escape room marathon in Barcelona, I’ll admit that Proyecto Omega almost flew under the radar, yet it ended up being my team’s surprise standout of the trip. Proyecto Omega has changed over time, adding on additional puzzles since it first opened and adding English playability in September 2023. While The City Escape Room’s La Taberna may have put the city of Terrassa on the map for escape room enthusiasts, Proyecto Omega competes in an entirely different category and is equally not to be missed when making the trip north from Barcelona.

Story

Superheroes and supervillains alike had been going missing for months. We believed they were being taken to a secret facility to have their powers extracted for nefarious purposes. We prepared to enter the facility and find out what was really going on.

Setting

Proyecto Omega took us to a secret superhero testing facility, with an aesthetic somewhere between that of a comic book and a Marvel movie. Across a variety of scenes, the decor was playful and polished.

Gameplay

Proyecto Omega was a standard escape room with a moderate level of difficulty.

Core gameplay revolved around solving puzzles and making connections.

Analysis

➕ The puzzles were top notch throughout Proyecto Omega, with numerous satisfying, layered solves that got us to interact with the space in incredibly cool ways. In a regional escape room market that frequently prioritizes adventure over puzzle creativity, Proyecto Omega demonstrated that it is possible to balance both in high doses.

➕ Proyecto Omega functioned as passionate fan art to various superhero fandoms without actually requiring much outside knowledge or nostalgia to appreciate it. This experience told its own complete story. Even one puzzle that was easier with some pre-existing knowledge still provided all the information needed to solve it within the world.

➕ We loved interacting with an adorable, entertaining, and helpful character who provided both narrative details and diegetic hinting throughout our journey. We made a friend, and our friendship developed as the experience progressed.

➕ The level of production design was stellar. Every element felt real, some of it was real, and every tiny detail was meticulously maintained. An early-game showstopper particularly suited its environment, and we loved all the layers that helped bring it to life.

➕ Each scene felt distinct and fresh, yet they all perfectly belonged in the same world. This diversity of scenic design and gameplay styles kept us on our toes and made the world feel even larger than it actually was, as no single space felt underutilized.

➕ One puzzle stretched our expectations, putting a clever and thematic twist on a classic escape room interaction.

➖ A laminated paper clue was frayed and not consistent with the quality and upkeep of everything else in the game. This is a tiny nitpick, and it only stuck out because literally every other element in Proyecto Omega was so pristine.

➕ A series of video content was well produced, full of fun Easter eggs while also providing a creative form of puzzle feedback.

➕/➖ An action-packed finale sequence took advantage of the full layout of the space, providing a satisfying ending to our super saga. We especially enjoyed the transition between different mediums, though a clever shift in framing could have benefited from clearer physical framing.

❓ Within the narrative of Proyecto Omega, we encountered some intriguing moral ambiguity that seemed to be setting up for something more meaningful than it delivered on, though also didn’t detract from our experience whatsoever. We questioned whether certain narrative details lost some nuance in their translation into English.

➕ Proyecto Omega took their team photos to the next level by not only providing us a myriad of costume and prop options, but also taking the time to edit in the appropriate superpower effect for each. This was a special souvenir that I was instantly excited to share with my friends and family.
