REA Reaction
This nameless entity was an aesthetically stunning Airbnb that entertained us for DAYS with its basement-to-rooftop theming, abundantly generous amenities, and escape room puzzles. Unfortunately, only two of these three elements genuinely warranted that much time.

The ambiance of this establishment was next-level, enveloping us in an eerie yet cozy haze of quirky art, cryptid tchotchkes, and quality diversions beyond the main event. I had a grand time staring at the walls, wishing I could buy the art (and later learning that it all came from Temu), and introducing my kids to Laser Tag. I neither came nor left as a Mothman devotee, but the commitment to the theme captivated me while I was there.
The gameplay itself leveraged the unique context to extend beyond the bounds of a normal escape room. It invited us to explore our surroundings in depth, interact with objects and space in unusual ways, and wonder at length about the information we discovered and our next steps. It often captured the nostalgic stop-and-start discovery cadence of old-timey point-and-click games, offering a very different rhythm than a typical room while still feeling familiar…

…which, in the moment, caused me to give this feeling too much benefit of the doubt. In retrospect, the lengthy bouts of bepuzzlement were often due to poor design and quality control, most notably stemming from an unreliable reset process but certainly permeating other aspects of the puzzles. The floor-to-ceiling detail wowed us but proved an overwhelming hunting ground for clues, and more than one puzzle seemed to have mistakes. I desperately wanted the puzzles to match the excellence of the ambiance, but it just wasn’t to be. We spent over a day start-and-stopping our investigations, when the actual content probably warranted only a couple of hours.
So, if the compare is other Airbnbs at large, this place is out of this world, especially for couples or small friend groups who need a home base for exploring nearby New River Gorge National Park. However, as an escape room, it falls short, unless you frame the puzzles as an added bonus to an arty experience. With that mindset, you can focus on what interests you and skip the frustrations, likely finding a fair bit of delight and mystery in the process. I would absolutely stay at other properties from these same hosts, just with recalibrated expectations of their strengths.
Who is this for?
- Story seekers
- Scenery snobs
- Mothman fans
- Best for players with at least some experience
Why play?
- To enhance your West Virginia trip with a healthy dose of weirdness
- To dress up like Mothman in the most adorable Mothman blanket imaginable. I dare you to try to imagine it.
Story
Mothman, a mysterious creature who roams the Appalachian mountains, has been grievously misunderstood since his first appearance. Indeed, is he even a moth? Even a man? Even a single identifiable entity? The only route to knowledge was through this house, existing on the very edge of space and time. Or something like that.

Setting
We were in a house. A real, bonafide house, replete with real, bonafide housewares. Unlike my own house, however, this one was filled with cryptid coziness, a lot of strange art, and one entirely blacklit basement, just like Mothman likes it.

Gameplay
Fun Mothman Themed House w/ Whole House Escape Room was an Airbnb escape room with a high level of difficulty due primarily to inept puzzle design and reset issues.
Gameplay consisted of searching, making connections, dexterity, deduction, and a few interesting object interactions.
Analysis
➕ The ambiance was stunning, rich, and detailed. It felt both cozy and other-worldly, an unthreatening way to bond with cryptids indeed.

➕ The Airbnb entertainment amenities were exceptional, offering tons of activities in addition to the puzzles. Air hockey, gaming systems, laser tag, darts, arcade games, and proximity to New River Gorge National Park meant we couldn’t possibly get bored, even on a rainy day.
➕/➖ The Airbnb lodging amenities were both generous and flawed, depending on your needs. While we had everything we needed materially, the upstairs rooms were tightly packed with accoutrements, leaving little room for our travel gear. Noise also carried throughout the house; I had an entire conversation with my kid directly through my bedroom floor into the basement. Convenient? Yes. Desired? No.
➕ The puzzles used the whole space, leveraging the expansiveness of an Airbnb experience well.
➖ A majority of the puzzles were rough, with problems ranging from too many degrees of freedom, inexplicably unused information, malfunctioning components, unclear logic, and outright mistakes.
➕ Amidst the mayhem of uneven puzzle design, a couple of activities exploited the time and space of this world well. The extra complexity and time requirements seemed appropriate to an extended experience like this, and I found the challenge to be refreshing.
➖The opening sequence required us to pursue a solution that might seem out of bounds in an Airbnb. We wondered how many people actually take that risk.
➖ It was possible to encounter a physical impasse beyond the reach of any hint. For self-sufficiency’s sake, this should be a no-no in a room without a gamemaster.
➕/➖ A prominent reveal was a genuine surprise but required some physical dexterity (and a bit of discomfort tolerance) to truly enjoy.
➕ The untimed nature of the game enabled us to leisurely speculate about the mysterious story that was revealed throughout. Though the narrative was somewhat convoluted, it was more compelling than 98% of escape rooms, and it was well-suited to this environment.
➖ Guests were encouraged to help with the reset process by following a reset guide. Unfortunately, I genuinely think our predecessors were toying with us; there were reset mistakes that would be unimagineable if executed by a true gamemaster and broke the game in fundamental ways. I would not recommend that Airbnbs use this strategy for managing such a core aspect of gameplay.
➕ The finale was the high point of the game and worth aiming for with some time left in your stay, especially if you are traveling with young’uns.
