REA Reaction

After playing Hijacked and Escape Annabelle (review coming soon) at Deadlock Escape, I have them on my radar as a company to watch in the St. Louis area. They’ve created fun escape rooms with varied puzzles, solid set design, and theatrical touches.

I appreciated that set design for Hijacked allowed them to fit a lot of escape room into a small space in a way that served the theme and story.

The puzzle flow started off a little rocky, with a lot of numbers and places to input them, but after we solved a few puzzles, the room flowed well. As we played, the puzzles became increasingly complex while avoiding large leaps in difficulty, which kept the game from ever becoming frustrating, and culminated in Hijacked’s best set piece and puzzles.

Hijacked didn’t reinvent the wheel, but what it did, it did well. If you’re visiting St. Louis, add Hijacked to your list of games to play.

Who is this for?

  • Adventure seekers
  • Puzzle lovers
  • Scenery snobs
  • Best for players with at least some experience
  • Players who don’t need to be a part of every puzzle

Why play?

  • Excellent set design
  • Defusing the bomb was a blast

Story

A terrorist group had placed a bomb on our private plane. We had an hour to disarm the bomb before it would explode.

Setting

Hijacked took place in the cabin of a private plane; the set was small but extremely well designed. From the floor to the ceiling, the room looked and felt almost like the real thing.

Gameplay

Deadlock’s Hijacked was a standard escape room with a moderate level of difficulty.

Core gameplay revolved around searching, making connections, and solving puzzles.

Analysis

➕ The set was well designed with great attention to detail. Most of the set was interactive and thoughtfully integrated into the puzzle design.

➕ The bomb defusing sequence was a real treat. The prop itself was elaborate, the puzzles varied, and the win state satisfying.

➕ /➖ Early in the game when we found information, there were too many places to input it. Once we’d solved the first few puzzles, the cluing became much better.

➖ One prop used in the game was incredibly easy to miss as it was the exact same color as the background. Even if it was spotted, it could easily be ignored, thinking it was a broken piece of the set. A different color of paint would help a lot.

❓This was a lot of escape room packed into a small space. As such, more than four people could get crowded quickly.
