REA Reaction
Revenge of the Sheep was filled with creative puzzling and unique tactile interactions. While I’ll admit I was initially underwhelmed by a somewhat sparse set, the game quickly won me over with its high density of joyous gameplay.
clueQuest’s missions all revolve, in some form, around saving the world from the evil machinations of Professor BlackSheep. In Revenge of the Sheep, we were tasked with shutting down the Professor’s newest SheepMutator device that would turn all the humans into sheep. And this is where the game’s core comedic cleverness came into play. The SheepMutator beacons could have taken the form of any random forgettable gizmos. But instead, they were cleverly disguised as British post boxes. Yup, those lanky red hexagonal prisms. After successfully completing our mission in-game, I spent the rest of the day gawking at every post box around London, wondering what fantastical plots they might conceal — which is precisely the sort of transformation of the mundane I love to see emanate past the walls of an escape room.

If you visit clueQuest to play ORIGENES, I recommend also adding Revenge of the Sheep to your itinerary, ideally prior to playing ORIGENES. Revenge of the Sheep embodies clueQuest’s distinctive style of gameplay and world-building, and you’ll appreciate some of the Easter eggs in ORIGENES that harken back to clueQuest’s earlier experiences.

Story
We were tasked with shutting down Professor BlackSheep’s newest evil contraption: the SheepMutator. To do so, we’d have to find and disable each of its receiving beacons, which just happened to look like British post boxes.

Setting
Revenge of the Sheep took us to a garage-like alleyway near where Professor BlackSheep had set several of his SheepMutator devices. The set overall felt somewhat sparse, yet we were pulled in by quirky, colorful, detailed set pieces with clear and compelling interactivity.

Gameplay
clueQuest’s Revenge of the Sheep was a standard escape room with a moderate level of difficulty.
Core gameplay revolved around searching, making connections, and puzzling.
Analysis
➕ Revenge of the Sheep was packed with satisfying, layered, well-signposted puzzles. There was a solid amount to puzzle through in a fairly compact space.
➕ All of clueQuest’s games lean heavily into unique tactile interactions, and this was particularly the case in Revenge of the Sheep. We were delighted by a range of hands-on mechanical puzzles and interactions that were so much more satisfying due to their lack of electronics.
➖ I questioned whether the scenic design felt empty or just fairly minimalist. While it reasonably evoked a generic urban setting, it was unclear where we were supposed to be: An alleyway? A garage? A brick-walled courtyard that contained both a post box and a fire hydrant?
➕ A creative sequence augmented our perception of our surroundings, with more layers than we’d initially anticipated.
➖/➕ There was relatively little sense of adventure on a broad scale — none of the unexpected doors or such that featured in some of clueQuest’s other games. However, I found that Revenge of the Sheep reasonably made up for this with an abundance of smaller scale discoveries.
➕ An interaction involving a fire hydrant was deeply weird and equally joyous. It prompted us to engage with an object in a novel way and from an uncommon perspective, all while strongly extending the game’s narrative and sense of humor.
➕/➖ clueQuest’s experiences stand out for their interconnected world-building and quirky characters. Revenge of the Sheep featured a healthy dose of these elements — and yet, there were missed opportunities to lean further into clueQuest’s signature humor in more of the gameplay itself, as they did in the aforementioned fire hydrant puzzle.
