REA Reaction

Good News: Lethal Decision 2 Hell Awaits was one of the best puzzle games that we played in Athens. Normally with horror games we walk away feeling like “the puzzles were great for a horror game…” In Lethal Decision 2, the puzzles were fantastic in comparison to other fantastic puzzle games.

Bad News: Unfortunately, it was also one of the most annoying horror games that we have ever played. The horror actors – while impressively acrobatic – were in the way all the time. It felt like Escape Clue Athens wanted to chase us… but the rooms were small and there was nowhere to run. When they weren’t chasing us to nowhere, they were grabbing at our ankles. Never have we felt more like a performer was in the way of a good time.

Ugly News: Lethal Decision 2 Hell Awaits felt unsafe from the moment we walked in the company’s front door and had to traverse black stairs in near total darkness, all while our eyes were adjusting from daylight… and it didn’t improve from there. Escape Clue Athens came up with a few innovative devices that players could trip over, fall from, or hit their heads on.

If you like puzzles, have an abundance of patience, and are willing to take on a fair amount of bodily risk, Lethal Decision 2 Hell Awaits just might be your game.

Story

It had been many years since we escaped the gates of hell at the mansion on Vosporou Street. Over the years many more people have disappeared, and while few believe the stories, we knew that the curse must be broken and the gate closed for good.

Setting

The set of Lethal Decision 2 Hell Awaits was equal parts interesting and confounding. On one hand, Escape Clue fit a lot of scene changes into their game world, and these spaces offered unique aesthetics and challenges within them. We truly never knew what we would encounter next in this ominous space.

On the other hand, most of the spaces felt like they were too small for the character-based horror interactions that the circumstances of the game demanded. There was nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, and while there were some incredibly cool interactions using the verticality of the space, they didn’t always feel safe or wise.

Gameplay

Escape Clue Athens’ Lethal Decision 2 Hell Awaits was a horror escape room with a higher level of difficulty.

Core gameplay revolved around searching, puzzling, making connections, and limited character interactions.

Analysis

➕ Horror escape rooms are not generally known for quality puzzle design. Lethal Decision 2 was the exception. The puzzles were interesting, built into large, interactive props, and fun to solve. They often involved the entire team working together.

➕ The set transitioned from scene to unexpected scene, each unlike the one before it. Each room had a distinctive look and feel. The sets often centered on an engaging central set piece that was integral to puzzles or challenges.

❌ Lethal Decision 2 was physically uncomfortable to play and not safe. We entered the game by ascending stairs in the darkness, for no real reason. The lighting was needlessly dim during some puzzle sections. Crawlspaces were tight with poor padding. We were constantly looking out for low doorways where we could hit our heads or scrape ourselves on maglocks. None of this added any drama or intrigue to the game.

Moreover, there were moments where it would be easy to fall pretty far onto hard concrete. If a player is jump-scared and loses their balance, or can’t handle strobe lights, this would be a real risk. Traversing the space safely was often more challenging than solving the puzzles.

➖ Escape Clue Athens broke their own rules in Lethal Decision 2. On three separate occasions, we had to push or pull on doors with excessive force, even though there was an explicit rule against this. In one instance, a door was entirely off its track, and this was the only way to move it. The rules also said “if you see the monster, you must run away,” but there was never anywhere to run. The sets were small, and we typically didn’t have access to move freely between them.

➕ The scare actor was acrobatically talented. They would appear in unexpected places. It was impressive.

➖ One prop that was integral to the finale was missing entirely. Later our gamemaster told us this prop had been broken. However, during the playthrough, we were confused how we were supposed to complete our goal without an obviously necessary item that it seemed we should have had. Thankfully, Escape Clue Athens had a setup where they bypassed this prop when we did everything else correctly to solve the puzzle. However, there should have been some way to clarify this, or substitute another item to use, even if the bypass would still have to happen.

➖ We couldn’t follow the story. One early scene introduced a character, but it left us a bit confused. We expected the rest of the game to bring clarity, but instead we were simply hunted by a demon. I’ll admit we didn’t play Lethal Decision 1, so it’s possible that was the missing link. If there was a deeper character backstory, we never understood it.

  1. In my opinion, this review is an excellent example of REA’s approach to providing fair, constructive and comprehensive analyses of escape rooms. We all have different tastes and tolerances for content and delivery (summed up by “your mileage may vary”). However, clunkiness, safety and player respect are to be called out when appropriate. Players count on that and providers/the industry benefit as well. I am very thankful that REA is providing this to a genre that is my passion and can only survive by being honestly dedicated to the pursuit of continuous improvement.

  2. Thank you. We really appreciate that you care about these aspects of game design, and we strive to provide as much valuable information as we can for players and creators alike.
