REA Reaction

Two of my favorite things in life are escape rooms and learning new things. As a result, I have a deep love of educational escape rooms. There aren’t many of them, and far fewer that are doing it well. 

LabEscape, is a traveling escape room that is based out of University of Illinois: Urbana-Champaign. The game is designed to impart scientific understanding, with an emphasis on quantum computing… and it does a lovely job. 

Immediately after playing, we invited Professor Paul Kwiat onto the Reality Escape Pod to further explore both this game and his expertise. 

I highly recommend playing LabEscape if you’re an escape room player who also loves learning. It’s not the most sophisticated escape room, but it is a beautiful merger of education and play, and I loved it. 

My big note for the game is that I would love to see more of the game components gated-off until they are relevant and solvable. We found that we had access to most of the game’s contents very early on, and that felt overwhelming, especially when keeping the science of the game in mind. 

Overall, I am so thrilled that I was encouraged to play LabEscape by our guests on Escape, Immerse, Explore: Time & Space 2025. It was one of those fortuitous moments that will stick with me for a very long time. 

Tips For Visiting

• Parking is available on-campus. I highly recommend leaving ample time to park and navigate campus.
• There are ample food options in the surrounding area, especially after you get off-campus.
