Cellular Odyssey presented one of the most unusual premises I’ve ever encountered for an escape room: in order to heal an ailing granny, we shrunk down to the size of a cell and entered her body to repair each of her organs. But we had to be quick, before granny’s gurgling bowels got the better of us.

In bringing this unique game to life, Can Bruna didn’t take themselves too seriously while also fully committing to the bit, guiding the experience in some truly unexpected and fantastical directions. As absurd as the setting might sound, it was a fully realized environment with a detailed and playful aesthetic. It felt like a deeply weird dream, but a good one (or, to use a reference that perhaps only our American readers will get, it felt like we were in an episode of one of my favorite childhood TV shows, The Magic School Bus.)

While Cellular Odyssey might stand out for its central gimmick, it didn’t skimp on the puzzles or story. The gameplay was varied, well integrated into the environment, and optimized for fun. Much of the experience was zany and humorous in tone, but there were also some touching and nostalgic moments.

Located an hour drive west of Barcelona, Cellular Odyssey is admittedly not the easiest game to get to within the densely crowded regional market, but it was well worth the trip. This unforgettably surreal experience is not to be missed.

Story

Granny was sick, and clearly normal medicine wouldn’t cut it. As medical professionals, we shrunk down to the size of a cell and entered into granny’s body to repair each of her organs.

Setting

We entered various organs of a human body. The aesthetic leaned into surreal whimsy, with a delightful range of colors, textures, and materials.

Core gameplay revolved around solving puzzles, making connections, searching, and dexterity challenges.

Analysis

➕ Cellular Odyssey had a charmingly scrappy, handmade aesthetic. Every set and prop was lovingly constructed into a vivid world in which I thoroughly enjoyed spending time.

➕ The scenery was meaningfully designed around the gameplay. Almost every detail mattered, and the puzzles involved some satisfying observational ahas.

➖ An opening transition required a bit too much of our collective imagination. It told the story clearly in theory, but fell a bit short in execution. A small visual change could have gone a long way.

➕ We were faced with a striking set piece that was an impressive work of art. In its distinctive style and immaculate detail, it immediately set a clear tone for the rest of the game.

➕/➖ An unusual interaction might have bugged me, yet it was nicely designed to include a range of discoveries. Other elements in this scene could have more consistently reinforced the change in scale.

Cellular Odyssey featured some small nods to Can Bruna’s previous escape room, providing a nostalgic reward for returning players while still telling a cohesive story to those, like me, who had only played Cellular Odyssey.

➕ A particularly thoughtful set of parallel puzzles won over my heart. They were creatively themed and expressive in both style and substance, including some distinctive Catalan flair.

💙 For players wishing to add an extra personal moment into their Cellular Odyssey experience, whether it’s a surprise proposal or a birthday present, you can book the “Cardiac Arrest” add-on which pauses the gameplay midway through and sets the scene with some additional ambience. While we didn’t experience this add-on directly, we still enjoyed seeing a lovely apparatus that would be utilized for it.

➖ One of the more visually interesting spaces of the experience felt overly simplistic in its gameplay, with a multi-pronged counting puzzle that had our stomachs turning for the wrong reasons.

➕ A comfortable seating option offered a satisfying release that was simple but very well calibrated.

➕ An explosive ending really made us feel like the shit. It was hilarious, exhilarating, deeply weird, and perfectly thematic all at once.
