Escape The Writer's Block - Room Escape Artist

I don’t get writer’s block. It’s a problem that other people deal with.

The Last Time

The last time that I had writer’s block was 2009 when I was on the final page of my Graduate Capstone… and if I’m being honest with myself, that wasn’t writer’s block at all. That was a burnt out grad student staring down the barrel of significant life change. Eventually I just sat down and wrote the damn thing, and it was easy once I got out of my own way.

A few months after graduating, my friend and REA writer Lindsay Froelich introduced me to the following Stephen King quote:

“Amateurs sit and wait for inspiration, the rest of us just get up and go to work.”

I never looked back. When it’s time to write, I deliver.

Today

Today I have two assignments:

Write the RECON Los Angeles talk that Lisa and I will deliver: The Next 2 Days and The Next 10 Years.
Draft an end-of-the-month post.

The RECON talk is coming along swimmingly. I’ve been writing this talk in my head for a year. It’s bursting out. No problem.

However… the talk has been obliterating my ability to think about or write anything else. Every draft that I’ve started feels like it’s cannibalizing the RECON talk. The talk has a gravitational pull in my mind that isn’t allowing other ideas to escape.

Getting To Work

Similar to 2009, I don’t have writer’s block… I have an overwhelming excitement about the talk that I’ll be delivering with Lisa in less than a month for so many of you. It’s a vision for the present and future of escape rooms and immersive games.

I cannot wait to see so many of you there. Folks who have supported us for months and others who have supported us for years.

People who have relied on our work for inspiration and growth… and individuals whose work inspires us to do what we do.

RECON will be packed with all of that warmth, brilliance, and care of these people, and I cannot wait for it. I hope to see you there.

I’m getting back to that talk, but I also would be remiss if I didn’t thank everyone who’s support helps insure that I can be a professional in this space. Thank you to every single one of our Patrons, and I’m looking forward to seeing so many of you at RECON Los Angeles.
