When venturing throughout the unbelievably gorgeous country of Switzerland, one quickly feels suspended from reality, like they’re in a fairytale. In this regard, Aunt Hilda’s Room was the quintessential Swiss escape room, transporting us back in time to a picturesque medieval town. It was a natural extension of so many of the scenes we saw out and about in this region, amplified with an extra dash of magic and meticulously designed interactivity.

The build quality of literally every element in Aunt Hilda’s Room was absurdly high. From cobblestone streets to detailed metalwork, this wasn’t just a set… it was the real thing. Thus, by not having to pretend that our surroundings were anything other than what appeared, we were set up to play the ultimate game of make believe.

But Aunt Hilda’s Room didn’t just look good — the gameplay was also quite brilliantly designed. Zooming out and looking at Trip Trap’s progression as a company, their focus has shifted from puzzles to experience over time, much like many other world-class escape room companies. Their earlier games, like An Evening with the Voodoo Queen and The Antiquary’s Testament, included increasingly satisfying puzzles. Their newest games, The House of Uncle Cornelius and The Garden of Madame Suzette, still included some wonderful puzzles, yet overall prioritized experiential storytelling. For my tastes, Aunt Hilda’s Room was perfectly situated at the intersection of these two approaches, featuring a few of the most polished, creative, and iconic escape room puzzles I’ve experienced anywhere, all without skimping even slightly on scenery or narrative.

Aunt Hilda’s Room was the first experience opened at Trip Trap’s flagship Grand Trip Trap Hotel location, and while it showed its age somewhat compared to the newer games at this location, it’s unequivocally a timeless gem. That said, the same can be said for each and every experience at The Grand Trip Trap Hotel — and Trip Trap’s other locations should not be overlooked either, especially for puzzle lovers. Put together, Trip Trap is a destination worth traveling to visit for any and every lover of escape rooms and immersive experiences.

Story

Aunt Hilda welcomed us into her abode with a story: a tantalizing tale about a sleeping village and a strange prediction.

Setting

Aunt Hilda’s Room opened in the titular bedroom of Aunt Hilda, the first resident of The Grand Trip Trap Hotel. Her tidy living quarters set the stage for a trip back in time to a vividly rendered medieval fairytale village.

Gameplay

Trip Trap’s Aunt Hilda’s Room was a standard escape room with a moderate level of difficulty.

Core gameplay revolved around solving puzzles and making connections.

Analysis

➕ With exquisite details both small and large, the scenic design of Aunt Hilda’s Room was marvelously magical. I was blown away by how many actual building materials and techniques were utilized, creating a hyperrealistic charm that was no mere illusion.

➕ The gameplay was consistently tactile, with a plethora of revelationary environmental reveals and interesting uses of the space. For me, Aunt Hilda’s Room embodied the pinnacle of Trip Trap’s puzzle creativity — a high bar across their impressive lineup of experiences.

➕/❓ The story of Aunt Hilda’s Room was compelling and well written. Their English translation was also pristine. While the opening audio was nicely produced, this method of storytelling could prove difficult for players who don’t process detailed audio as well and might benefit from additional visual reinforcement.

➖ Most of Aunt Hilda’s Room showed its age only in ways that were appropriate for the story, but one exception were some scrolls that we encountered throughout the game. They were quite worn, hard to read, and didn’t lay flat on their own.

➕ Within the wonderful world of Aunt Hilda’s Room, I particularly loved multiple interactions that felt like treasure hunts. They utilized simple props and classic techniques in novel ways, setting us up to discover incredible new layers to the space and secrets hidden in plain sight.

➕ A layered visual reveal was an absolute hoot. I was blown away by just how beautiful this puzzle sequence was, illuminating how thoughtfully an escape room can take advantage of its environment.

➕ A mechanical contraption was instantly intriguing and fun to play with as a team. It embodied the whimsy and alternate logic of the fairytale world.

➕ Aunt Hilda’s Room included lots of keys… which was appropriate for a story set long, long ago. All these keys were thematic for the time period, and one particular key is easily in contention for the Best Escape Room Key Of All Time.

➕/➖ A dramatic transition drew us into the final scene. While this capstone was fitting for both story and gameplay, it was perhaps a bit too expected, presenting us with an ending that we could have predicted from the beginning.
