Sometimes it’s fun to play a simple, puzzle-forward game, especially when it has a relatable theme and a touch of humor. Well, the cat’s out of the bag: Here, Kitty Kitty at Escape Room L.A. was a purr-fect blend of cat-inspired silliness with more than enough puzzles to keep even an experienced team busy and entertained.

Madge’s cat Whiskers had gone missing, and she’d asked us to help find it before her bingo game started… in about an hour. After entering her apartment, we spread out and started looking for clues to the whereabouts of the wayward kitty, hoping to avoid a cat-astrophe. The game flowed well and utilized all the available space, and though the set was rather simple, there were still a couple of fun surprises.
During our search, we encountered plenty of engaging puzzles – on walls, in the kitchen, on tables and other spaces around the room. There was clever use of props, including some everyday items I’d never seen incorporated in puzzles. Most puzzles involved some sort of logic or observation to solve, and we enjoyed putting the pieces together. The one time we asked our in-room gamemaster a question, they stayed in character while giving a brief hint. For the rest of the game, we mostly forgot they were even there.
We ended the experience with a surprise and a giggle. We’ve come to expect puzzle-forward games from Escape Room L.A., having previously enjoyed their other, more challenging rooms, Atlantis and Black Dragon. Newer players now have an entry point to this company’s cat-alogue with Here, Kitty Kitty.

Story
Whiskers the cat was the pride and joy of our neighbor Madge McCarthy, local cat lady and beloved bingo aficionado. Nothing could keep her away from tonight’s big event, the Double or Nothing Bingo Jackpot! But poor Whiskers had gone missing and Madge was frantic. Purr-haps we’d be able to find her cat before the first bingo ball is called?

Setting
The game took place in Madge’s modest apartment. It was simple but homey, with cute curtains, a retro kitchen, and a floral easy chair. There was a cat tree in the corner, and cat decor here and there. There was even a bowl of hard candies; it felt like grandma’s house.

Gameplay
Escape Room L.A.’s Here, Kitty Kitty was a standard, cat-themed escape room with a low level of difficulty.
Core gameplay revolved around searching, observation, making connections, and puzzling.
Analysis
➕ The large number of puzzles kept us busy throughout the hour. Some we tackled solo, while others worked better when we paired up, but overall we were feline pretty comfortable that we could solve the puzzles. There were also plenty of puns involved, with at least one inspired by familiar cat videos.
➕/➖ The set decor was appropriate for the theme; it’s exactly where I’d imagine a neighborhood cat lady to live, minus the cat hair and allergic reaction. However, compared to a lot of games in the Los Angeles market, and even Escape L.A.’s other games, the set was less polished and less impressive.
➕ Puzzles utilized familiar props associated with the cat-lady trope in creative, often unexpected ways. A couple of puzzles would have seemed bland and out of place in a different room, and but in this context they were clever and completely appropriate.
➖ We did notice some minor wear and tear on a few of the props. While it never interfered with our puzzling, there was opportunity for a small refresh.
➕ The finale was cute and left everyone smiling.
🐈 😺 Escape Room L.A. utilizes in-room gamemasters for all their games. In our experience, they stay out of the way until you approach them and ask for a hint. In Here, Kitty Kitty, they sat in the easy chair reading Modern Cat magazine, of course!

Tips For Visiting
- There is limited street parking and a pay-to-park lot next door.
- The lobby and rest rooms are on the first floor with the game on another floor, accessed by an elevator. The gamemaster will show you to the room and monitor the game from within the gamespace.
- When we visit Los Angeles for games, we like breakfast at Blu Jam Cafe or DuPar’s (best pancakes!), lunch at Mel’s Diner or Porto’s, and dinner at Yang Chow. For the best soup dumplings, visit Din Tai Fung (reservations highly recommended).
