REA Reaction

At first glance, Grandma’s Surprise appeared ordinary and unassuming, a typical apartment-setting escape room. But there was an immediate warmth to it, from the cute animated intro video and my chipper gamemaster setting the tone, to the friendly Grandma voiceover. The game didn’t take itself too seriously, and true to its name, it did have a surprise in store.

An old-fashioned TV cabinet, gramophone, and radio. There are 2 framed pictures on the wall behind the TV of an elderly man and woman.

While there was a reasonable level of challenge, everything was well clued. I completed the main game with a significant amount of time remaining, which gave me the chance to experience their “adaptive” system that unlocks additional puzzle tasks. It was seamlessly integrated, and I really appreciated the extra value it added.

Overall, I found the story and its implementation charming, and the solving experience smooth. It was everything a visit to Grandma’s should be!

Story

I was visiting Grandma’s to celebrate her 100th birthday with her. She’d promised to reveal her secrets!

Setting

I was in Grandma’s apartment, which looked pretty typical, with its flowered wallpaper and wooden furniture… until it wasn’t typical at all. It was way out there.

Gameplay

Trapped Puzzle Game’s Grandma’ Surprise was a standard escape room with a moderate level of difficulty.

Gameplay involved parallel puzzle tracks, and generally emphasized observation and logic.

Analysis

➕ The game was designed to have multiple puzzles that could be solved at the same time, which is amenable to the larger groups that the space accommodates.

❓Based on the decor of Grandma’s apartment, it was easy to think that the room was dated, but there was more than meets the eye here. It was not well described in the marketing materials, other than an allusion to the surprise in the title.

➖ The set and props were showing some signs of wear, though it did not impact the overall experience.

➕ The adaptive system worked well to provide additional puzzle content when warranted, in order to maximize every team’s play time.
