REA Reaction
The Crimsons Recipe welcomed us into the beautiful village of Elderbroeck. Escaperoom Schijndel took the iconic Dutch escape room aesthetic — a particular combination of dark, moody, and cinematic — and applied it to a charming, non-horror setting. From a functioning tavern to a mysteriously abandoned candy shop and beyond, each scene throughout The Crimsons Recipe was a sight to behold, and there was a bounty of details and expert craftsmanship to admire.
In addition to the physical build, The Crimsons Recipe also stood out for its lighting and sound design. The lighting organically led us from scene to scene, focusing our attention while also facilitating some beautiful reveals. The soundtrack was also particularly well balanced, with a cinematic score bringing the space to life, a variety of voices helping to tell the story, and well executed spatial audio.

Where The Crimsons Recipe fumbled was in the story itself. For an experience that so strongly prioritized storytelling, we wanted to be as enchanted by the whole as we were by many of the individual elements. Much of the worldbuilding and banter between side characters was delightful. However, while the pieces were mostly there, they never quite cohered into a sensible central narrative. There were multiple missed opportunities to more directly develop the main characters along the way, yet by the end, the payoff was underwhelming. Multiple possible side plot points presented through the gameplay could have provided reasonable motivations for certain characters’ decisions and actions, but they remained disconnected.
Narrative criticism aside, The Crimsons Recipe was an attractive adventure that is worth a play if you’re in the area. With some tweaks, it could easily rise to become a regional standout.

Story
We paid a visit to the village of Elderbroeck, which had in years past become somewhat of a ghost town. The candy shop in the town’s center was perhaps not as sweet as it seemed, and nobody knew what had happened to the owner and his daughter.

Setting
The Crimsons Recipe took place in a charming fairytale-esque village. A candy shop, toy store, tavern, and various other buildings lined the town square. The environment was vast and extravagently detailed, with numerous spaces to explore as the experience progressed.

Gameplay
Escaperoom Schijndel’s The Crimsons Recipe was a standard escape room with a moderate level of difficulty.
Core gameplay revolved around making connections and solving puzzles.
Analysis
➕ A cold-ish start instantly immersed us in the overworld of The Crimsons Recipe while also giving us time to use the restroom, relax, and get settled. This was a player-friendly hybrid of Benelux escape room lobby hospitality with more seamless environmental immersion.
➕ Escaperoom Schijndel created a compelling world with an expansive, detailed, and beautiful set. It was dark and moody, yet it felt more like a fairytale than a horror story. As we unlocked and explored the full space, we were impressed by the level of polish throughout.
➕/➖ The Crimsons Recipe took advantage of height to create a sense of awe and wonder. However, amidst the otherwise high level of realism, a depiction of the sky stuck out as somewhat cheesy.
➖ One puzzle input required more force than usual for an escape room, in an area of the set we normally wouldn’t expect to interact with directly. Even when we knew what to do, we weren’t sure whether we should do it. A different tool that more clearly associated with this part of the space could have helped alleviate any uncertainty.
➕ Lighting and sound organically guided us from space to space. It was consistently clear where to focus our attention and when to progress to the next environment.
➕ True to their candy shop theming, the scent design throughout The Crimsons Recipe made the experience even sweeter.
➕ We encountered a charming cast of characters throughout The Crimsons Recipe, and their English voice acting was top-notch. Even though we never met these characters face-to-face, spatial audio was effective in distributing the characters throughout the world, and full blackouts signaled when we should stop puzzling and focus our attention on a cutscene.
➖ The story was communicated clearly, yet it lacked a coherent narrative structure or reasonable character motivations. Many story details, especially throughout the middle of the experience, proved extraneous and thus were wasted opportunities to more meaningfully develop the characters or overall plot. Some unwarranted violence against pigeons especially felt random and unnecessary, unless this plot point had offered a motivation for the events that followed. The ending left us perplexed, simultaneously not offering sufficient resolution for the dark secret at the center of the story while also asking for more of the audience’s emotions than it had properly earned. This all felt like the ingredients of a story that hadn’t had quite enough time to bake together into a unified whole. Yet, if Escaperoom Schijndel were to connect a few more dots and more carefully consider their sequence of events, the tale of The Crimsons Recipe was just a few steps away from greatness.
➕/➖ The puzzles in The Crimsons Recipe were generally well clued and thematic for the space. For certain puzzles that centered around story details, there was an opportunity to ensure that those details were more directly relevant, rather than relying primarily on audio cutscenes to drive forward the action. A particularly involved puzzle offered significant backstory for a central character, with elements distributed throughout the space, yet practically none of these details mattered outside of the puzzle.
➖ The final “puzzle” was all show and no substance, and a missed opportunity on multiple levels. A decision point had no consequence or meaning. A magical effect and some surrounding dazzle was dampened through repetition without variation. It was possible to do this task wrong… and apparently still get the correct outcome.
➕ The offboarding was filled with extra premium touches, including a particularly charming experience around our team photo.
