Were you watching closely? If not, you might have missed how Finest Escape pulled off quite a magic trick: transforming The Prestige, a classic movie about two competitive magicians, into a compelling, immersive escape room experience. We were mesmerized by wonderful actor interactions, gorgeous detailed spaces, and layered puzzling. 

We’d played at a Finest Escape location in Bamberg on our last visit to the region, and were awed by the scale of those adventures. The set of Prestige was even more impressive due to the unique footprint, level of detail, and surprises along the way. The designers had a big canvas to work with and used it effectively, creating spaces that were plenty of fun to play in. 

We began our adventure at the entrance to the Magikulum, a majestic theater where Magnifico (no relation to that one in Laval) performed his magic tricks. His newest sensation? The Transported Man, an illusion our boss, Blackstone, was dying to replicate. We were there to observe the trick, learn its secrets, and report back. Though we’d hoped to vanish into the crowd, we were the only ones there that night. And yet, an impatient ticket taker waited for us to approach. This first actor interaction set the tone that we were headed into something special. 

Scenes with the actor ranged from entertaining and lighthearted to dramatic and emotional. Cinematic cut scenes performed around us brought us into the story, immersing us in the narrative. One sequence was simply magical, a truly “WOW!” moment.

High quality puzzles were woven into the tapestry of narrative and set, fitting the theme and providing more than a few “ta-da” moments. There was a nice variety of puzzles, including a few close-up moments that were really fun to watch. While a couple of puzzles felt commonplace, a complex task involving logic put a feather in our cap.

There is no shortage of escape rooms based on movies, but this one levitates the bar. If you’re familiar with the movie (or read the book), you’ll delight in spotting the numerous references throughout the game. Yet I didn’t watch the film until afterwards, and I was still captivated. So make your way to Finest Escape in Nuremberg and play Prestige, a not-to-be-missed magical experience. We wouldn’t misdirect you!

Story

As assistants of Blackstone, the world-renowned magician, we were brought in to figure out how his rival, Magnifico, performed the amazing Transported Man trick and report back, so Blackstone could copy it for himself!

Setting

The game began just outside the Magikulum, a stately theater where Magnifico performed his magic act. A wooden ticket booth at the end of a hallway displayed signs advertising upcoming shows. In the booth, a ticket taker waited impatiently for our tickets.

Gameplay

Finest Escape’s Prestige was a standard escape room with a moderate level of difficulty. 

Core gameplay revolved around searching, observation, making connections, actor interactions, and puzzling.

Analysis

➕ The set was detailed and larger-than-life. It surrounded us with so much character that it felt as if we were intruding into someone’s personal space. A few set pieces moved in unique, unexpected ways. 

➕ The narrative followed plot points from the movie, but also changed things up to make the story uniquely its own.

➕ Puzzles often represented key themes and scenes from the movie, bringing us into the narrative in a way that went beyond simply solving. Puzzles that were directly influenced by the film were especially delightful to work through.

➖ One puzzle elevated gameplay by requiring input from two players, but it leaned more towards one player having the majority of the solve. There’s an opportunity to restructure the puzzle to more evenly balance the tasks.

➕ One of my favorite puzzles was highly-themed and brought a specific plot point into gameplay; it hatched a new take on a familiar puzzle construct.

➖ An impressive prop in the finale was not adequately explained. It was confusing because I hadn’t seen the film prior to playing, and I interpreted it to mean something else. A bit more context would have a greater impact on this last act.

➕Actor performances were highly entertaining and made us feel along with the characters. Because these sequences happened in our space, and sometimes with us, we became an integral part of the story. It was quite magical.

Tips For Visiting

• Finest Escape has multiple locations in Nuremberg and Bamberg. Prestige is at Schweinauer Hauptstraße 162, at the Nuremberg TV Tower. Be sure to give the correct address to your driver – speaking from experience!
• There is a parking lot.
• We stayed at Hotel Victoria, located just inside the old town gate near the train station. We really appreciated their focus on customer service, and the breakfast buffet was stellar.  
• We enjoyed the microbrewery menu at Bruderherz and the burgers at Burgerheart.
