REA Reaction

High Noon in The Old West captured the Wild West atmosphere well, leaning into familiar tropes. There were lighthearted moments – like pausing for a dance – alongside interactions with the town’s colorful, old-timey characters.

The puzzle experience offered plenty of variety, though one dexterity challenge kept a teammate physically occupied for much of the game and felt unnecessarily difficult.

Overall, there were plenty of fun puzzles to work on. Despite struggling with the game at certain points, we got our money’s worth of gameplay out of the experience.

Story

We had to infiltrate the Wild Bunch gang and blow open their vault to recover their stolen loot.

Setting

The game was set at a western saloon. The environment was mostly painted on, but it was cute. I enjoyed that the voices of people we heard in the game were “old-timey.”

Gameplay

Time to Escape’s High Noon in The Old West was a standard escape room with a moderate level of difficulty.

There was a wide range of puzzle types including observation puzzles, process puzzles, decoding, physical manipulation, and logic.

Analysis

➕ The many different puzzle types kept things interesting and fun.

➖ There was a physical dexterity puzzle that is fairly common in escape rooms, but it was overly difficult and burned a lot of game time. We were lucky that one member of our group actually wanted to play it, but it still took them a long time and our progress was significantly gated by that.

➕ One unique process puzzle was designed to engage most of the group and I had fun doing it, despite the amount of time it took.

➖ There was a small amount of red-herring content. Since the game already had a large amount of actual puzzles, these seemed like unnecessary distractions.

➖ The solution entry method for puzzles was somewhat repetitive. We were warned beforehand that it was finicky. Also, we weren’t always certain what was unlocked (if at all) after each successful entry.

➕ As a group of 4, we were close to running out of time by the end, but it made the finale of blowing open the vault and solving the final puzzle extremely exciting.
