Belgium has an abundance of great escape rooms vying for enthusiasts’ attention, so The Missing Link in the small town of Geel may not be on your radar. If it isn’t, it should be. I’ve played all three of their current experiences and have always been impressed by the passion and heart apparent in every build. They have a way of delivering clever, original takes on classic escape-room-style puzzles that match each theme oh-so-well. I can always count on surprises and wow moments that make me smile and also leave an impression long after the game has ended. I was delighted to find that Henry’s Birthday was no exception.

Our adventure began just outside of Henry’s modest family home. Since our gamemaster “had a scheduling conflict” and couldn’t attend Henry’s birthday, she asked us to go in her place. Although we’d never actually met Henry, we were more than happy to crash his party.

Once inside, we found typical furnishings that looked formal yet also dated, like I’d just stepped into my high school best friend’s parents’ house. A few birthday decorations and party props made the space look halfway festive, effectively setting a tone implying both “Happy Birthday!”… and that something wasn’t quite right.

Interesting puzzles that leaned into the birthday theme brought the characters to life. Though some puzzles were straightforward and familiar, the theming made them fresh and fun to solve. One puzzle had us thinking right out of the gate, while another surprised us with an amusing, whimsical touch. Although we struggled with a couple of puzzles that appeared really simple yet were ultimately unclear, most puzzles solved cleanly with elegant solutions.

As the story unfolded and the set revealed itself in unexpected ways, we learned more about the family’s complicated backstory, and the nuance behind Henry’s situation. The actor added a layer of nail-biting excitement, yet our interactions with them were not overly terrifying. The finale wrapped up loose ends in an emotional segment, putting a bow on the whole experience.

As an enthusiast, I am really excited when I play a game that shines under an owner’s care and attention. It doesn’t always have to be flashy and big budget; sometimes it’s understated, with a unique story, or puzzles that just make me smile because they are done just a bit differently.  In all three of The Missing Link’s games, they delivered something more than I expected, and for that reason alone, I will keep coming back.

Story

Our gamemaster hadn’t heard from their friend Henry, nor his family, in quite some time, so she was surprised when she received an invitation to Henry’s upcoming birthday party. Unable to attend, she sent us instead, along with a gift for the birthday boy.

Setting

The game began outside Henry’s home. A black, wrought-iron gate leading to the backyard stood a few feet from the front door. Inside, the small entryway was simply decorated, with family photos on the walls, a display of greeting cards, and a foyer table piled high with birthday gifts.

Gameplay

The Missing Link’s Henry’s Birthday was a standard horror-themed escape room with a moderate level of difficulty.

Core gameplay revolved around searching, observing, making connections, puzzling, and interacting with an actor.

Analysis

➕ The story contained a surprising amount of depth and emotion. During the course of the game, we became invested in the characters and cared about their outcomes.

➕ Audio segments introduced the compelling backstory of Henry’s family. This technique filled in narrative points and allowed players to focus on story before returning to puzzling.

➖ One highly-themed puzzle had low lighting, making critical elements hard to see. A few small, well-placed spotlights would go a long way towards improving player experience while keeping the overall tone of the space.

➕ The build was large, yet the individual gameplay spaces had a smaller, intimate feel. The horror was presented in a way that fit this design, yet also kept players a bit removed from the action. It was a clever use of space that made the game feel less overtly terrifying than it otherwise could have been, even with jump scares and other moments of horror.

➕ Creative game elements leaned into the birthday theme without falling into horror-movie cliches. One memorable birthday party moment involved players in a scene that was both playful and a bit bizarre at the same time.

➖ At one point we accessed the help system, and instead of a clue relevant to our stage in the puzzle, we received pre-programmed information that was not helpful.

🎂 😱 Henry may be having a birthday party, but the game is not for children under the age of 14.

Tips For Visiting
