I continue to find puzzle solving as a technical problem interesting . The Tilt Maze seems like an ideal problem to solve with tech. It has only two inputs, they are predictable, and they are dials.

3D rendering closeup of a humanoid robot holding a wooden tilt maze. Text reads, "Robot emoji solving."

So while the outcome of this video is exactly what I expected, it’s still cool seeing the execution play out.

I’ve never owned one of these wooden tilt mazes, and I don’t think that I have any friends that own one… but somehow I have seen a lot of them.

  1. I admit to zero interest in playing with those types of mazes. However, this video was very interesting, informative and educational. I was wowed by the adaptive learning of the machinery. The fact that shortcuts were learned scared the pants off me as a sniff of what the unintended consequences of AI may bring when machines of greater capability are empowered. By comparison, watching the brilliance of crows and squirrels solving puzzles is endearing without the side order of sci-fi/evil robot fear. AI (Animal Intelligence and Artificial Intelligence) is interesting either way. More of both please.

    1. I feel all of this so much.

I’m glad that you’re enjoying my occasional tangent into the trivial.

  2. Our family had one of those when my boys were young and we just about wore a groove in the thing. I got where I could solve it pretty quickly but nowhere near as fast as the AI. Given that I’m down to my last quarter century or so on this planet I’m hopeful that Skynet will take 40 or 50 years to reach it fruition. Isaac Asimov wrote the robot series many decades ago and he saw the inherent danger in giving machines free will. Unfortunately, I doubt the human race of today is quite so perceptive.
This movie was made in 1970 when I was only seven years old. Rather bone chillingly perceptive for its time.

I hate to be so dark and negative but AI scares the bejeesus out of me.
“open letter to Boston robotics… You should build and program a robot that can do escape rooms. Their play testing would be flawless and they would find all of the problems with the game, quickly.”
Time to go find my tinfoil hat. 😂
