Yuletide hit all of our favorite notes in escape rooms: a whimsical vibe, thematic puzzling, exciting reveals, fun character interactions, and nostalgia. The story was portrayed through gameplay as we turned on the lights and prepared the house for our family’s arrival. Each moment felt intentional and magical. The game was full of personality with character interactions both small and large. Puzzles ranged from strong with good feedback to a bit dated with finicky inputs, but they were all on-theme and festive.

There were moments in Yuletide when I felt at home in the holiday season, with family traditions shining through the snowy exterior. Most walks of life can find bits of the game relatable while experiencing the gameplay’s cheer, regardless of whether you celebrate Christmas or not. We left this game giggling, singing, and grinning from (pointy elf) ear to (pointy elf) ear. While this game is for newbies and experienced players alike (who doesn’t love some holiday cheer?!), newer teams will want a few more elves to help.
If you’re in Greenville, especially if you’re playing Starlight Motel in the same location, check out Yuletide Magic for some holiday cheer.

Story
We decided to suck it up and visit our family on Christmas Eve, but they were running late because of a snowstorm! Since they would be home in an hour, it was our job to turn on all of the lights to spread some Christmas cheer.

Setting
Yuletide Magic began outside of a house covered in Christmas lights and snow. Inside of the house, adorable decorations were scattered just the way my mom decorates: on every surface!

Gameplay
Escape Artist Greenville’s Yuletide Magic was a standard escape room with a moderate level of difficulty.
Core gameplay revolved around solving puzzles, making connections, communicating, and interacting with a character.
Analysis
➕ Yuletide brought players through a chilly onboarding sequence fit for the season. These small starting puzzles culminated into an adorable creation.
➕ Open-ended character interactions brought Yuletide to life. While the game felt a bit dated in spots, these varied characters enhanced the gameplay both before and during the experience.
➖ The soundtrack playing during the first half of the game was festive yet repetitive. We wished there were more holiday tunes to jam out to in the beginning.
➕ The gameplay was centered around an input device we used more than once. This device made sense narratively and triggered enjoyable and magical moments.
➕ A mid-game interaction had a whimsical mechanical moment perfect for the holidays.
➖ One of the inputs for a long sequence was finicky, but required dexterity. It was frustrating to have an input require dexterity while being inconsistent.
➕ Lighting cues were utilized for gameplay progression, leading to a wonderful climax.
