We were supposed to be the ones doing the pranking, but instead we felt like we got pranked. We entered Camp Harvest Moon: Prank Wars ’92 excited to experience Dare 2 Escape’s newest offering and quickly realized the game was not intended for experienced players and was not indicative of the trajectory of Dare 2 Escape’s potential in escape room design. The bright spot of playing Camp Harvest Moon was our gamemaster, who was very enthusiastic about getting us into the mood to head to summer camp. However, once our time started, we ended up doing chores disguised as puzzles for the next 30 minutes. Given the room’s title, we wished we had an opportunity to engage in some pranking rather than just cleaning up the aftermath in our bunk.

The puzzles were logical, but nothing exceptional stood out to our team. The tasks were literally written as a check-list on a whiteboard. A bunkbed, steamer trunk, and a bunch of random 90s stuff compounded the lackluster set in the single 12’x12′ room where we spent the game. True to form, Camp Harvest Moon included a callout to the canonical Tillman family of Dare 2 Escape lore, but the reference seemed forced and didn’t add anything meaningful to the experience. The room was also cluttered with the belongings of a host of Stranger Things characters, which struck us as being entirely the wrong decade for a room set in ’92. By 1992 all of those characters would be much too old to be attending summer camp (except maybe Holly, but I digress).

A photo of soft toilet paper and an egg atop a midcentury modern table. Text reads, "Dare 2 Escape wouldn't provide or allow us to shoot photos. So we recreated a bit of the game with much softer toilet paper, a real egg, and a nicer table."

To be fair, the room used for Camp Harvest Moon was most likely storage in another lifetime, and Dare 2 Escape decided to maximize the use of the space by creating a new beginner-friendly escape room. Indeed, Dare 2 Escape succeeded in creating a logical escape room for young children or first time players. We also appreciated that Camp Harvest Moon was priced appropriately lower compared to the other more immersive experiences at the location. However, we would recommend that experienced players skip Camp Harvest Moon and choose The Video Store or At the Hop Ice Cream Shoppe as a more level appropriate non-horror option at Dare 2 Escape.

Story

It was bonfire night, an evening of revelry and s’mores. But we were sent back to Cabin 13 early. The camp counselors had gotten wind of a prank war and we were the top suspects. When we arrived at our cabin we discovered a huge mess: eggs, toilet paper, and our belongings were scattered everywhere! We had just one hour to clean everything up before lights out and avoid getting busted by Counselor Jason.

Setting

We entered into a small, one room summer camp cabin. There was one twin sized bunk bed for the four of us, some shelves, a TV, a folding table, and a white board with all of the tasks we needed to complete before lights out. Various 90s toys and the belongings from several Stranger Things characters were also scattered about.

Gameplay

Dare 2 Escape’s Camp Harvest Moon: Prank Wars ’92 was an in-person escape room with an easy level of difficulty.

Gameplay revolved around completing a list of tasks that led to puzzle solutions. The puzzles included searching, counting, and making visual connections.

Analysis

➕ The puzzles were clear and solvable. We knew exactly what we needed to do to acquire solutions throughout the entirety of the escape room.

➖ The description of Camp Harvest Moon didn’t deliver. We never felt like we were in a prank war. We just got caught on the receiving end of being pranked and needed to clean up our cabin.

➖ The set was underwhelming. It was obviously a storage space that they wanted to start using as a small escape room.

➕ Camp Harvest Moon: Pranks Wars ’92 was Dare 2 Escape’s least expensive room, so their pricing structure is appropriate for this newbie friendly escape room.

❓ Dare 2 Escape managed to shoehorn the Tillman’s into Camp Harvest Moon to fit with the rest of the Dare 2 Escape universe. Also, the names and belongings of a bunch of Stranger Things characters were included as Easter eggs, which were out of place for the 90s decade.
