REA Reaction

The Krugger’s Secret was an epic horror experience in three acts, and a great night of crazed horror fun! In one thrilling evening, we puzzled, dined on a gourmet meal, and puzzled some more while being chased by creepy characters throughout the hotel. Then we spent the night in our very own gruesome guestroom. I’ve done several overnight stay escapes and numerous horror rooms, but this combination was one of my all time favorite experiences.

The hotel staff were fully in character from the moment we stepped through the front door of the Insomnia Hotel, perfectly named for the experience to come. Reception was especially creepy. We were assigned the Xperiment room, uniquely decorated with torturous details – literally – and one of the weirdest bathrooms I’ve ever seen. Each guest room in the hotel related to a member of the Krugger family, and served as an individual escape room experience with its own unique decor and puzzling. Fancy a night sleeping in an open coffin? They’ve got you covered. While I didn’t have any issues with my guest room, considering the experience of another REA contributor, gameplay appears to vary a lot between rooms, with not all of them being as logical or well clued as the one I experienced. Additionally others found their rooms uncomfortably warm when they visited during the summer.

Dinner took place in a cozy dining room. Our host regaled us with chilling stories of the Krugger family as we dined on a delicious multi-course meal. The actors never broke character, and we enjoyed bantering with the wacky waitstaff. When I asked our server for a drink refill, he gave us such an intimidating stare, we were almost afraid to ask for extra napkins! It was hilarious and so well done.

After dinner, we were let loose to explore the hotel, and it was a puzzle frenzy. We discovered highly-themed rooms with loads of puzzles, some easy and others almost too challenging. We were not alone in this creepy hotel, and in between puzzles, we were either being chased from room to room or hiding, often in ridiculous places. These encounters made solving puzzles even more challenging and also a bit frustrating, since I often had to start over with a puzzle once the coast was clear, which may be by design. The evening culminated in an exhilarating finale that left us hot, sweaty and breathless… and also a bit confused, as we didn’t realize the experience had actually ended.

Insomnia Corporation established themselves in the horror escape room genre with The Doctor’s Cocktail and La Casa (review coming soon). The Krugger’s Secret brought the experience to a whole other level, with an escape room, dinner, show, horror, puzzles, and overnight stay, all together in one epic overnight. At the current price point, it’s a great value for your escape room dollars. We absolutely loved it, and I can’t recommend it enough as a must-play travel destination. Reserve your room at the Insomnia Hotel and learn the Krugger family’s secrets. I’ll bet they’re dying to welcome you.

Setting

Insomnia Hotel was located above the historic mountain town of Berga in Catalonia, Spain, about 90 minutes from Barcelona. The area felt remote as we drove up a narrow twisty road from the town to the hotel. The lobby and common areas were styled with antiques, historic pictures and unusual knickknacks and artifacts.

Gameplay

Insomnia Corporation’s The Krugger’s Secret was an interactive horror-themed experience that included escape-room-style puzzling, dinner with performance show, and overnight accommodations. Note that the experience lasted from 6pm to 12am; there was no horror or any activity from midnight through checkout the next morning.

The evening began with puzzling limited to our own guest room. Gameplay revolved around searching, observing, making connections, and solving a variety of puzzles. Puzzle difficulty varied by guest room. Afterwards, staff directed us to the dining room. During the meal, gameplay shifted away from puzzles, and instead involved dining and entertaining interactions with the restaurant staff and host.

Gameplay after dinner extended to a horror experience throughout the hotel and revolved around observation, making connections, and solving a variety of puzzles, all while being pursued by creepy costumed characters. Puzzle difficulty was moderate to challenging.

Analysis

βž• The hotel staff stayed in character as they welcomed us to the hotel and throughout the experience. Their performances fit the macabre ambience of the setting, each with nuanced details that established their unique personalities.

βž• There were 6 different guest accommodations. We stayed in the Xperiment room, inspired by Dr. Krugger. He was rumored to have performed mad experiments under lock and key. Giant cages and rusty equipment made for very strange decor, indeed. There were a variety of puzzles in this room, including a small physical challenge. This room was rated 5 out of 5 for difficulty, and I would agree.

βž–/❓While we were very happy with our hotel room, this experience wasn’t necessarily consistent throughout the hotel. I have heard that rooms are uneven in regards to lighting, puzzle design, and overall accommodations, so your mileage may vary depending on where you stay. Also, because there were no cameras in the guest rooms, there wasn’t any active gamemastering for this segment, though hints were available if needed.

βž• The gamespace in the hotel was low-lit and moody, with doors off of a long, central hallway. Each puzzle room offered a uniquely themed setting and was fully built out and immersive. The attention to detail was impressive.

βž–During the puzzle frenzy after dinner, we found some puzzles were hard to solve, either from low lighting, finicky mechanics, lack of cluing, or complex logic, especially combined with jump scares or the occasional menacing intruder. I would have appreciated a few more quick-hit puzzle wins worked into the overall structure. Note to completionists: You may get frustrated when having to abandon a puzzle mid solve. Also, you most likely won’t see every puzzle, or even every puzzle space. I know we didn’t!

βž•The multi-course dinner was a foodie’s delight, with tasty morsels in unique presentations that elevated the dining experience. During each course, backstories of Krugger family members connected the family to the food in a fun, though often macabre, way.

βž•Though each team sat at their own table and was served separately, entertaining actor interactions combined with the cozy space made for a positive, shared experience.

βž–Though the puzzles were well-themed to each space, there was no overarching mission or purpose to the gameplay. In addition, we scored points for solving puzzles, but in the end, the points didn’t matter to the story nor the gameplay. There was also an opportunity for a more connected, in-world “why” for the hotel room portion of the experience.

βž•/βž–The evening activities concluded with an exciting, expertly performed, adrenaline-fueled finale, though there was no defining moment indicating the experience had actually ended. We would have preferred a more concrete ending.

πŸ›ŽοΈ The game is replayable by just booking a different themed guest room, and besides, it’s nearly impossible to experience all of the spaces and puzzles in the allotted time. Guests can also choose just to stay in the hotel to play a single guest room and stay overnight. However, booking The Krugger’s Secret is the only way to get the complete dinner and horror experience with the guest room.

😱 🫣 For those with pediophobia – the irrational fear of dolls – there is one particularly creepy doll in a main stairway that was really unnerving. I kept expecting it to move. It didn’t. It was just as disturbing the next morning. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Tips For Visiting

  • The game is available in Spanish and English. We played on a date that was reserved for all English-language guests. If you arrange ahead, they will provide English translation during a Spanish game. Although we didn’t experience it that way, we’d still recommend trying to arrange a group large enough for all English speakers or inquire about all-English events.
  • There is a parking lot available on the right side of the road before you reach the hotel.
  • There are six horror-themed guest rooms available, with double occupancy and en suite bathrooms. Two of the rooms can accommodate three guests.
  • Dietary restrictions and preferences including vegetarian and vegan can be accommodated upon request with advance notice.

Book your experience with Insomnia Corporation’s The Kruggers’ Secret, and tell them that the Room Escape Artist sent you.
