REA Reaction

The Soul Collector transported us to a beautiful antique shop full of character and mysteries.

An eclectic New Orleans curio shop.

Compared to the local Eastern Pennsylvania escape room market, The Soul Collector stands out for its high-quality set design and gameplay. The room felt both homemade and polished, and it was clear that the creators really care about what they’re doing.

We enjoyed how many layers of puzzles and challenges were packed into The Soul Collector. With so much to do and discover, this room can easily keep an enthusiast team busy for quite a while, and provide a substantial but achievable challenge for newer teams.

Who is this for?

  • Puzzle lovers
  • Antiques enthusiasts
  • Best for players with at least some experience

Story

While vacationing in New Orleans, our friend went missing. We heard from some locals that many missing person cases traced back to a sinister antique shop. As we entered, the door sealed behind us (but not really) and we had one hour before we became part of the soul collector’s permanent collection.

An old cash register.

Setting

The Soul Collector took place in a New Orleans curio shop. It was packed with real antiques, ranging in vibe from eccentric to creepy.

Assorted images hung on the wall of an old New Orleans curio shop.

Gameplay

The game was puzzle-focused with some searching and dexterity challenges.

Analysis

➕ The Soul Collector‘s set felt like a real curio shop. It was filled with an eclectic range of found objects, many of which were cleverly integrated into puzzles without creating red herrings.

➕ For a room with a lot of combination locks, lock mapping was consistently clear; we never found there to be any ambiguity as to which combination went with which lock. A structured physical presentation of multiple locks provided a satisfyingly tactile progression.

➖ The Soul Collector began with a promising narrative preface, but we wanted to see more narrative transition points to create more gripping psychological/ emotional tension. In particular, we wished the titular character had a stronger presence throughout the game.

➕ The finale sequence was dramatic and revealing.

➖ The lighting in the room made it challenging to solve certain puzzles, especially those which involved color. One flashlight provided to us wasn’t quite sufficient.

🦆 The room featured some delightfully duck-sized ducks, which quacked us up.
