REA Reaction

Joyous. That’s the first word that comes to mind when I think about Wizard’s Treasure.

This escape room was mechanically and aesthetically gorgeous, with a playful whimsy tying everything together.

A beautiful wizard's lab filled with books, glassware, and other contraptions.

It never took itself too seriously. It started with a delightful, humorous introduction. This silliness continued with the characters we encountered in the first act. While the ending was telegraphed throughout the entire second act, leaving opportunity for a more dynamic conclusion, the finale was still dramatic, beautiful, and, of course, joyous.

Of note, this was a completely different game from the original 60 Out game at a different location with a similar name, Wizard’s Workshop (reviewed in 2017 and now closed). Wizard’s Treasure has one Easter egg that only the most observant players might notice, but otherwise bears no resemblance to its predecessor. While 60 Out is a franchise, Wizard’s Treasure was developed in house at this location (Hollywood).

The only way to fail to enjoy Wizard’s Treasure is to attack it too forcefully. It was a family-friendly adventure. It’s meant to be enjoyed linearly, as a group. If you split up, you’ll miss out on both character and puzzles. This isn’t to say the puzzles were easy. There were fun aha moments; other solves took multiple hands coordinating together. Bring a small team and savor together.

Wizard’s Treasure was the surprise darling of our fall trip to Los Angeles. The creator had invited us, and the game was located conveniently enough to fit into our crazy schedule. We love when creators reach out, and we always strive to visit. After we played, we sent a lot of people – both enthusiasts and casual players – to this escape room, and both demographics have been consistently satisfied with their experience.

It is without hesitation that I recommend Wizard’s Treasure be a part of any Los Angeles escape room excursion.

Story

When this escape room was struggling during the pandemic, they took on a tenant… who happened to be a wizard… and a scammer. Bad choice. He took the escape room’s money and locked it up in his mystical safe. The escape room company decided to put this room up on their website as a game players could book. It turns out we’d booked a chance to try to get them their money back.

Setting

We started in a mystical garden outside the wizard’s workshop. It had a whimsical aesthetic with flowers, lights, and colors. Once we gained access to the wizard’s workshop we were in a Disney-like environment loaded with detail and wonder.

Gameplay

60 Out’s Wizard’s Treasure was a standard escape room with a moderate level of difficulty.

The escape room has two distinct acts. In the first act core gameplay revolved around observing details, making connections, thinking outside the box, and some searching. In the second act, gameplay focused more on collaborating and solving puzzles, while still requiring keen observation.

Analysis

➕ The set was captivating. From the smallest details in the first act, to the large, interactive set pieces in the second act, everything was polished. It was beautiful.

➕ The first act was delightful, with silly interactions and whimsical solves.

➖ Early on, one clue wasn’t quite balanced… potentially requiring a (totally in world!) hint, but which could steal the wonderful aha.

➕ In the second act, the puzzles generally required multiple people to solve. These were fun, collaborative challenges, around large set pieces that everyone could enjoy.

➖ One late game prop lacked feedback.

➕ The interaction design was stellar.

➖ There was an opportunity for a boss battle, or perhaps, wizard’s duel, to add a twist to our expected game progression, or to further punctuate the ending.

➕ The lighting added a lot of Wizard’s Treasure, throughout the game, and in the culmination of our efforts.
