REA Reaction

David and I love events where puzzles are woven into interactive environments. We like to get into costume and enjoy a themed venue. He’ll weave between the characters, learning their stories, and bringing me back thematic puzzles to solve. I like the rush of solving in all the chaos. The Wedding Party provided just this type of experience, and we had a lovely evening.

The highlight was the characters with their distinctive personalities. The actors were excellent. The Wedding Party was at its best when we were interacting with them to get critical information for the puzzles. The puzzles were enjoyable, and well-clued.

My mixed feelings on this event stem from the theme itself.

On the one hand, I love how approachable a wedding is. Everyone knows what to do. Everyone owns the right costume. The rules of engagement were immediately clear. It’s easy to play our role as wedding guests. Pair that with its the gradually increasing difficulty curve of the puzzles, and The Wedding Party is an event that extends the audience for immersive gaming. It’s an event that can get new players hooked. They do so much right.

On the other hand, the things that make weddings so expensive, and made this event expensive, are the things I personally care least about: the venue and the food. It’s not that The Wedding Party is too expensive for what it is. As an event planner, I know full well that it’s priced fairly. The struggle is that you have to be excited to pay the premium for puzzling at a wedding venue and eating wedding-priced food (which was pretty good). Additionally a wedding is far less interesting than say a 1940s Jazz Club where spies are afoot… and that comes to Boston every year, with a bigger cast, more spectacle, and a lower price point.

If you have the budget, I wholeheartedly recommend The Wedding Party. This was a limited run event, and there are only a few shows in Boston in July, so get your tickets now. But if you’ll miss the money, there are other opportunities to puzzle in the midst of more spectacle, for less money, happening in Boston in other seasons.

Story

Our friends Jack and Norah were getting married. It was a mostly normal wedding, just like they are a mostly normal couple. It was very them.

Setting

The Wedding Party took place at the W Hotel in Boston. It was in a ground floor restaurant/ bar space at the front of the hotel, with large windows facing the street. The room was set for a wedding, with tables, flowers, and a large wedding cake on display. It looked the part.

Gameplay

Secret City’s The Wedding Party was a puzzle hunt within the pretense of wedding.

Solving the puzzles involved logic and deduction, as well as interacting with the characters in the wedding party and some of the props around the room.

Analysis

➕/➖ The staging at a wedding made this event incredibly accessible. Everyone has a reference point. Attendees know what to expect. It was easy to play along and interact with the characters from our role as wedding guests. That said, I wasn’t particularly enthusiastic about the theme because we go to a lot of weddings. Also, I found this event hard to talk about. The name “The Wedding Party” was confusing every time I mentioned it.

➕ The characters were over the top, which was a lot of fun. Their wedding speeches were phenomenal. Through these speeches, we got to know each character, and this helped us interact with them later in the game as part of the puzzle hunt. They had distinct personalities. Some of the speeches were wonderfully cringey… although we’ve seen worse, at a real wedding!

➖ The Wedding Party pivoted abruptly from “wedding” to “puzzle hunt.” While this was narratively justified (the bride had constructed the puzzle hunt for her guests), we would have liked the two elements to be more intertwined. It would have been intriguing if some aspect of the meal had been part of a puzzle, but that would require getting the venue involved, and that’s probably not on the menu. Either way, The Wedding Party was at its best when maximizing the physical space.

➕ The puzzles worked well. These were largely paper puzzles, but they were fair, fun, and appropriate for solving at our tables. The difficulty curve was balanced, with the puzzles escalating in complexity as we progressed. When we finished ahead of other tables, we received bonus puzzles, which were a huge step up in difficulty, more interesting, and kept us busy through to the finale.

➖ We solved the puzzles in tables of six. Since these were small, paper puzzles, we would have appreciated having multiple copies of the puzzles for each table, to allow more people to participate in the solves.

➕ We especially enjoyed the actor-driven puzzles, where saying or doing the right thing yielded crucial information.

➕ The props were thoughtfully designed to belong at a wedding.

➕ The food was surprisingly competent, and the dessert was downright fantastic. The food was better than I’ve had at many weddings I’ve attended… which was good because we paid for it.

➖ There was a cash bar, which was appropriate, but even for downtown Boston, the drinks were very expensive.

❓As someone who runs events, and rents event space, I know this production is expensive. The venue is great, and in a prime location. Plus the event included a 3-course meal. This was nevertheless expensive, especially if you aren’t valuing the presence of the meal. The problem was the points of comparison. When I think of the spectacle of Club Drosselmeyer, which comes to Boston each December, The Wedding Party just didn’t compare. Your opinion on price will likely come down to what you value most, and for me, the aspects that are driving up cost for The Wedding Party just weren’t the reason I was a guest at this affaire.

Tips For Visiting

• We recommend taking the T to Boylston. Otherwise, you’re trying to park on the streets of Boston, or in an expensive garage.
• The experience includes a 3-course meal.
• Come dressed for a wedding!
