REA Reaction

MindMaze holds a special place in my heart because it was the company where I played my third ever escape room back in early 2014, and the first great game of my career: Alchemist’s Chamber.

More than a decade later, I returned to Prague and had the opportunity to play the sequel to a game that meant so much to me, Alchemist’s Legacy.

Alchemist’s Legacy was a very well executed classic escape room. The setting was beautiful, the puzzles were clever, and MindMaze paid close attention to the details.

Additionally, this was an extremely accessible and newbie friendly game. When I left, I found my mind drifting back to Alchemist’s Chamber in 2014. In so many ways, playing that game enabled me to create Room Escape Artist, because I left it feeling invigorated and like I had seen a glimpse of the future. It would take nearly a year before I played an escape room in North America that rivaled what MindMaze had created in those early days.

As I walked down the streets of Prague, I couldn’t help but feel excitement for the random locals and tourists who book Alchemist’s Legacy, because I think that it’s a modern version of the kind of escape room that can ignite the imagination. I love games that welcome new players into the world of escape rooms, and like its predecessor, Alchemist’s Legacy has that power… and all these years later I still found myself loving every second of this game. The classic style of escape rooms never died, but not enough games are made in this style, with this level of skill and care.

  • The puzzles play well, with some unusual twists

Story

A 16th century alchemist had died before finishing his crowning achievement, creating a Homunculus; a living being made of clay. The Homunculus existed and lived in its incomplete state. We needed to finish the alchemist’s work.

Setting

If I had to describe Alchemist’s Legacy in a single word: elegance. It was a pretty, gentle, and confidently decorated space from start to finish. While Alchemist’s Legacy was not an especially large game, it was a beautiful space in which to explore MindMaze’s puzzles.

MindMaze went to great lengths to really own their space, creating custom housing and faceplates for the building’s various infrastructure and seamlessly blending all of it into their game world.

Gameplay

MindMaze’s Alchemist’s Legacy was a standard escape room with a moderate level of difficulty.

Core gameplay revolved around observing, making connections, and solving puzzles.

Analysis

➕ Alchemist’s Legacy revealed itself to us through a simple, but dramatic opening.

➕ The set was beautiful. MindMaze had gone to great lengths to hide everything modern within the space so that it felt like we had journeyed back in time.

➕ The alchemist’s workshop was a treasure trove of beautiful props and they were accessible to us. We appreciated the tactile nature of the space. (In escape rooms, we often find interesting objects to be glued down or behind glass, but that was not the case here.)

➕ Through the puzzles, we interacted with the most unusual and compelling set pieces in the Alchemist’s Legacy. For the most part, the puzzles were not complicated. We’d solve the aha, and then interact with objects to complete the puzzle’s solution. We had continuous forward momentum.

➖ We spent a lot of time on a complex logic puzzle, not realizing that there were more information indicators available than we’d originally sensed.

➕ Lighting and sound design enhanced the experience of solving puzzles, and clarified our progress. These effects also elevated the well-integrated hint system, which was fun to interact with.

➕ The puzzles were largely thematic, for example, relying on chemistry and other trickery to deliver alchemy-inspired magic. We delighted in these effects.

➖ It would be easy to miss the start of the finale, which descended subtly but dramatically into our experience.

➖ There was an opportunity to spin the finale into a more polished version, with more intentional design for a certain set of interactive props that everything revolved around.

❓MindMaze offers “battle game” mode for Alchemist’s Legacy. With battle game, two teams play Alchemist’s Legacy in separate, identical rooms against each other and compete for the best time. In this mode, key progress indicators flash for each team when the other team solves a certain step, so there is a sense of battle. However, there is no way to interact with, hint, or sabotage the other team. We did not play battle game, so we can’t speak to the experience. This can be an exciting way to involve a larger group, and we appreciate that MindMaze offers the option. However, we expect most teams will get more enjoyment from savoring the interactions in Alchemist’s Legacy rather than racing through them to win the battle.

Tips For Visiting

  • This game is available in Czech or English.
  • This game is at their Opatovická 4, Prague 1 location.
  • This game is the successor to our original Alchemist’s Chamber, completely reimagined, rebuilt, and reopened in May 2025. If you played the original version (which David played in 2014!) this is a completely new experience.
