REA Reaction

Haunted House was a game we’d been hearing about for almost a decade when we finally stepped into its eerie setting in 2026. While it wasn’t novel today in the way it would have been if I’d played it back then, it wowed me differently: I recognized that it was leaps and bounds ahead of its time.

The technology in Haunted House was impressive on its own. It’s incredible that The Chamber made this tech work at the time that they built it. Throughout the experience, they made objects move in theatrically haunted ways. In particular, one central set piece captivated us with its ouija-inspired magic. We’ve still never seen anything quite like it.

From a story standpoint, Haunted House got off to a rough start that made it challenging to determine who was who. An early puzzle seemed like it should teach us about the characters, but it wasn’t entirely successful. Thus we were at a disadvantage as we tried to put together the story and relationships from the written materials in the game. There was quite a bit of reading, and we didn’t fully follow the plot.

Still, there was no doubt that the place was haunted – the ghosts revealed themselves in all sorts of clever ways – and we were there to un-haunt it. Along the way, we enjoyed the puzzles, especially those built into nifty mechanisms. In 2026, escape room horror has evolved, and Haunted House felt pretty tame (but still, this one is not for horror-averse players), but that didn’t make it any less enjoyable. Haunted House is a special game that has stood the test of time. It’s still worth adding to your Prague itinerary; just go in with the appropriate expectations.

Story

More than 50 years ago, a family had met a terrible end within the walls of this home. The owner desperately needed to sell the abandoned property and had hired us to put the spirits to rest.

Setting

Built into an old apartment building, Haunted House was exactly as advertised: a home that was very haunted. The Chamber used technology and atmosphere to make this space feel occupied by another presence. Additionally, the age of Haunted House kind of worked in its favor… it just made the space feel older and more haunted.

Gameplay

The Chamber’s Haunted House was a standard escape room with a moderate level of difficulty.

Core gameplay revolved around searching, observing, making connections, and solving puzzles. Also, the place was haunted, so a measure of bravery was required.

Analysis

➕ The Chamber made this haunted house feel real. From the wallpaper to the wood, it felt like we’d stepped back in time. Moreover, they covered any modern trappings well, hiding them from view.

➕ The Chamber used lighting to direct our movement, a technique that is a standby of many horror games, but was ahead of its time in Haunted House.

➖ Haunted House opened with a classic escape room puzzle that was probably intended to ground the characters, but it was not interesting enough to make us care about them.

➖ A lot of the story was told through materials that we found and read. The pacing worked well, but it was more than we wanted to read, especially in dim lighting, and we weren’t always sure what was story and what was part of a puzzle. We also confused two of the characters and weren’t entirely clear on all the plot points. There was an opportunity for more vivid storytelling.

➕ /➖ The prop we carried into the experience was thematic, and it offered an atypical way to get information. That said, we were unclear at first whether it provided essential clue structure or extra hinting. It was funny at the onset, but eventually became a standard search task. Still, while we weren’t taken with it, we can also see it as a great way to continuously engage certain types of players.

➕ We were enamored with a prop that had magical properties, and how with it, we circled in on a solution. This was the best moment of the game – just my two cents.

➕ In this haunted environment, items often launched unexpectedly into the air. These were powerful movements that surprised and delighted us, even when they made us jump. We appreciated that these were unmissable, and also player movement was choreographed to prioritize safety.

➕ /➖ More subtle feedback wasn’t always clear. We had a great time solving a puzzle, but we continued long after its time had stopped because we didn’t realize anything had opened.
