REA Reaction

After traveling around Alaska for 10 days, my friends and I decided to end our vacation with ESCAPE! Alaska’s The Tomb and boy am I glad we did! Initially we weren’t necessarily eager to complete another ancient Egyptian themed escape room, but from the moment we entered the lobby filled with interesting curios and comfortable, inviting seating, I could tell we were in good hands. The love poured into this game was felt before we even entered the room. We were led down a well themed and fog filled corridor by our costumed game master to receive our briefing via a well produced video, after which we were set loose to complete our mission. We escaped in so little time, I was left wanting more, but reflecting back on the experience, I believe this was a combination of a team that was just “on” and some very clean solving puzzles.

Story

While hunting for the tomb of the great Egyptian High Priest Ankhe-Khunsu, our old colleague went mad and trapped our team of archeologists inside the tomb. With only an hour of air supply left, we had to discover the secrets to open the tomb to regain our freedom.

Setting

We found ourselves in a convincing archaeological site, complete with construction style lighting, sand, and ancient Egyptian artifacts.

Gameplay

ESCAPE! Alaska’s The Tomb was a standard escape room with a moderate level of difficulty.

This escape room was filled with relatively self contained puzzles. It is easy to miss a complete puzzle if your teammates are working on a puzzle while you are working on another. That said, ESCAPE! Alaska did a great job using lighting and sound to ensure that the whole team experienced puzzle solve moments.

There was a good mix of translations, dexterity, and searching puzzles.

Analysis

➕ The hint system was clever enough to make sense in world.

➕ The gamemaster was in costume and a delight.

❓Our team nearly set the all time record in this room. We were a well functioning team, but this likely means there’s an opportunity to add more content as the top leaderboard times were also similarly fast.

➕ There was a fun leaderboard and a set of achievements (not all of which were time based!) that we were sent after our successful escape.

➖ There was some minor wear on game pieces that could be touched up.

➖ One piece of the set seemed unfinished. (Is there supposed to be drywall in ancient Egypt?)

❓ Our gamemaster was in costume but didn’t have a backstory. This is an opportunity to build more of a story into The Tomb.

➕ The lobby was really delightful, filled with interesting props and inviting seating.
