If you are using locks outdoors or in wet/ humid indoor environments, you’re almost certainly learning that locks don’t last long before they start breaking down. 

There is a simple solution to the problem: 

Marine Locks

Marine locks are designed specifically for use in maritime environments… on ships, docks, and generally outdoors. 

These locks are specifically built with metals that resist corrosion. My personal preference is brass locks. 

Your options are narrow when it comes to marine locks and you’ll usually pay a bit of a premium for them… but the reliability and longevity that they bring in moist environments is well worth it. 

Here are a few options:

Keyed Padlocks

Commando Lock – Marine Series: Premium Brass Padlock

This is one of my favorite locks in general. It has a clean, timeless aesthetic… and mechanically it is silky smooth.

Abus – 75IB Marine Grade Chrome Plated Brass Padlock

When in doubt, Abus usually has a solid product available for you.

Combination Padlocks

Marine combination locks aren’t usually as reliable as their keyed counterparts, but if you really want one, I’d suggest: 

Brinks – 30mm Solid Brass 4-Dial Resettable Padlock

This little lock isn’t especially robust, but that full brass construction should keep spinning long after most other locks have corroded and jammed up. The other upside here is that it is inexpensive.

A little knowledge goes a long way

It’s not especially common knowledge that marine locks exist… and in escape rooms, this is a solution to a pretty niche problem. However, if you’re having problems with locks in moist environments, I hope that this helps you out.
