REA Reaction

Poison was a joyous celebration of Batman and comic book villainy. With a bright tone and aesthetic reminiscent of a cartoon, Kadabra Escape had us puzzling and laughing manically laughing our way though this adventure.

Of the escape rooms that we played in Spain, Poison felt mechanically closer to the international escape room norm than most of the games that we played on our trip. It was notably far cleaner than the other games that we played in Spain. We were shocked when we crawled on the floor and emerged without a speck of dust on our clothes.

A ventriloquist dummy puppet dressed as a mobster, holding a machine gun, sitting on a shelf. Pointing his gun towards the camera.

The stars of Poison were the set pieces that felt big, mechanical, and responsive. There wasn’t a lot of subtlety here, and that was perfect for a game centered on comic villains.

We left Kadabra Escape feeling like we loved Poison, but wanted just a bit more from it. A little more drama, and a heavier focus on paying off some of the promise of these set pieces would have made this already wonderful game hit perfectly.

Overall, Poison was a big, fun, and well-executed Batman-esque game… and I don’t think that I knew how much I wanted to play a game like this until I was in it. If you’re in Barcelona, I highly recommend checking it out.

Story

The Joker was on the loose again. We needed to infiltrate his lair to put a stop to his plans.

Setting

Like any good Batman villain, our story started off in cells of Arkham Asylum.

Poison had a strong, vibrant Batman vibe. Things were beautifully built out and fun to inhabit. The whole place was meticulously maintained.

Gameplay

Kadabra Escape’s Poison was a standard escape room with a moderate level of difficulty.

It has a split start, with different team members in different cells.

Core gameplay revolved around searching, observing, making connections, and solving puzzles. Many puzzles required communication between team members.

Analysis

➕ The set was beautifully built, well-maintained, and clean. This was the cleanest game that we played in Spain – and it wasn’t close.

➕ The puzzle-focused gameplay was well-clued and flowed smoothly.

➕/➖ With communication-heavy gameplay in the opening act, Kadabra Escape minded the details, including sound-proofing, and opening up a clear communication channel. However, we wished the act of speaking to our teammates was a little more comfortable; the height was awkward.

➕ Kadabra Escape excelled at creating large, eye-catching set pieces.

➕/➖ Behind our favorite set piece, we found an unusual, playful scene that established a character. However, narratively, this scene didn’t deliver on the fantasy of the space.

➕ Poison was playful. The more we laughed, the more the game laughed back.

➖ Still, we wanted more from the interactions with the Batman villains. There was opportunity to further elevate the drama and the stakes of the experience.

➕ The interactions were big: button-y buttons and lever-y levers. They got one late interaction bang-on.

➕ Kadabra Escape ramped up the pressure at the end. We solved this escape game pretty quickly, and still, the finale was intense.

➕/❓ You get more out of this game if you know Batman. However, there’s still a lot to enjoy if the references are lost on you or some of your teammates.
