The Fairy Confectionary, aka La ConFéeserie, was sweet and irresistible in every way imaginable! The game combined an adorable set and fun, sweet shop-themed puzzles with a story that ended with a twist we didn’t see coming. Though we had a few issues with set and puzzles that somewhat soured parts of our experience, overall this game was a delight, and by far the best of the five games we’ve played at SOS Aventures.

A counter in a candy show with chocolate treats and bottles of sugary sweets.

As we entered the confectionary shop, newly inherited from our long-lost aunt, we were mesmerized by treats of every type, enhanced by the subtle scent of sugary snacks. Shelves, tables and drawers were decorated with jars of colorful candy, boxes of chocolates, lollipops, cupcakes, and more. It was immersive and a bit overwhelming… and really impressive.

The puzzles were on-theme, using cakes and candies in so many different ways. The variety of non-linear tasks was a confectionary assortment that gave us plenty of challenges during the 75-minute game time. But while so many of the puzzles and props brought out child-like joy – along with growing hunger pangs – a few puzzles were unnecessarily difficult to solve. One prop in particular caused so much frustration early on that we simply guessed our way through it. There were also a few red herrings that gummed up our progress.

The mysteries of the shop were eventually revealed, complete with a satisfying twist that led to one of the best moments in the game. If you are in the Montreal area, make sure to stop in Saint-Jérôme and play The Fairy Confectionary, a tasty experience and great excuse for a post-game dessert.

Story

We were surprised to learn we’d inherited a confectionery shop from our long-lost aunt. Faced with a pile of outstanding orders, we had no choice but to start filling requests. But we soon discovered more about our mysterious aunt, and the real secret to her shop’s success.

Setting

The confectionary shop was bright and colorful, with piles of treats of every type – candy, cupcakes, lollipops, candy apples, and more – arranged invitingly on counters, shelves, and in display cases. Up a few steps in the back of the shop, a small dining area with a few cute tables and chairs invited customers to enjoy their treats.

Gameplay

The Fairy Confectionary was a standard escape room with a moderate level of difficulty.

Core gameplay revolved around searching, observation, making connections, and puzzling.

Analysis

➕ The set was colorful and inviting. It even smelled like candy when we entered the store. With multiple levels and spaces to explore, there was plenty of room to move around. It was so beautiful; I just wanted to stay!

➕ There was a good variety of puzzles. Some were familiar, with hands-on activities, and some were really challenging. One of my favorites involved running back and forth solving a uniquely-themed, logic-based puzzle.

➖ One prop early in the game was wonky and hard to use. It caused a lot of frustration, as we knew what to do, we just couldn’t get the prop to respond as intended.

➕ Many tasks were satisfying and appealed to my sense of order and logic. One had us all working in a single area, reaching over each other and snickering as we all tried to get in on the action.

➖ A multi-layered puzzle was located in an awkward location, making details hard to see. Though not a physical puzzle, it oddly required some pretty good abdominal strength. Unfortunately, this space was also warm and stuffy, adding to our frustration and crankiness. It made getting to the solution much more difficult than it needed to be.

➖ Although the gamemaster explained the scenario at the start of the game, later story reveals – and the conclusion – were only in French; as a result, we missed key parts of the story. At the end, the gamemaster filled in the gaps. While the story was unique and quirky, the finale was anticlimactic compared to the overall experience.

🧁La ConFéeserie is a play on the french words confiserie (confectionary) and fée (fairy).
