REA Reaction

While on its surface Revolt at the Lock was a standard detective-themed escape room set in a home, there was more depth to this experience than was immediately apparent when we walked through its front door.

Professor Lock, the founder of Lock Academy, and his rival Jim Key were silly, endearing characters. Revolt at the Lock treated their world with the utmost sincerity, but these characters and their shenanigans were delightful. The plot twisted them up.

While the gameplay in the first act wasn’t the most dynamic, with a very traditional escape room flow, in the second act, the game became more interesting. The experience ended with a worthy finale in a compelling set that made us earn our win as a team.

While Lock Academy doesn’t have the wow elements of some of the other top games in Paris, it has a sense of place and it has a soul. The games started off very normal, but transformed into quirky, eccentric places with unusual characters where strange things happen. The games were puzzley, first and foremost, but they still had personality. At this location, we recommend both The Examination and Revolt at the Lock.

Story

Professor Lock, the founder of Paris’ premier detective school, had started acting strangely. Then the announcement hit: his academy had been sold to his nemesis, notorious criminal Jim Key.

We had to break into Professor Lock’s home and figure out what had happened to him. We were willing to go to any extreme to save both Professor Lock and The Academy.

Setting

Revolt at the Lock opened with a very tongue-in-cheek 1960s-inspired spy-meets-detective bachelor pad. Lock Academy really underlined the joke with an Austin Powers movie poster.

As we pushed deeper into the game, the set became more unusual and detailed. The game world had surprising range.

Gameplay

Lock Academy’s Revolt at the Lock was a standard escape room with a moderate level of difficulty.

Core gameplay revolved around searching, making connections, and solving puzzles, with very light interacting.

Analysis

➕ The quirky setup for Revolt at the Lock was unusual and amusing. We set out on the strangest detective mission… with a weird but satisfying solution that had consequences for the gameplay.

➕ Revolt at the Lock was enhanced by limited actor interaction. This was minimal, but fun. It expanded the gameplay outside of expected parameters.

➖ Sometimes puzzle paths overstayed their welcome. One puzzle in particular, which couldn’t easily involve many people, plodded along as we input information.

➕/➖ While the set was thematically of a time, and had personality, it was still a more mundane place. For the majority of the game we interacted with pretty standard props.

➕ We loved one prop in the second act that came hot off the press.

➕ The finale was dynamic. It involved the whole team, and required excellent communication and coordination. Furthermore, it became increasingly challenging as we got better at it. It delivered an energizing, satisfying conclusion.
