REA Reaction
Expansive. That’s Alpha District in one word. The world was enormous and so exquisitely detailed that it felt real.
Alpha District shined in surprising interaction design. On multiple occasions, a solution made us say, “I can’t believe that actually worked.” But the more it happened, the more we learned to think in this way. Not only was the set real, but the world asked us to solve contextually. Alpha District was a mechanically imaginative escape room. It was refreshing.

The place where the world-building lagged was in the character design and storytelling. I loved the adventure, but I didn’t feel meaningfully connected to a story outcome.
Escape Time Le Mans loves destructible puzzles, and Alpha District had no shortage of these. Their existence was exhilarating. These interactions were generally well-clued, although one required us to radio back to HQ for extra permission.
While all of these mechanics were exciting, I can’t say I loved every interaction. One in particular added unnecessary risk. I commend Escape Time Le Mans for executing this with safety in mind, all things considered. That said, they clearly have the design, technical, and construction prowess to get the same effect in a truly safe manner. There was no reason to take any risk, even a relatively controlled one.
I love a detailed, fully realized cyberpunk adventure, and Alpha District delivered on that fiction. We felt badass solving our way through this game. For a grand adventure, I strongly recommend a train ride from Paris to Le Mans to visit this company.

Story
Our agency had sent us to 2257 to retrieve the heart of ORA, a powerful object stolen by former agent Vincent Lenoir. The only way to restore balance to the timestream was to successfully complete this mission.

Setting
Alpha District was a sprawling cyberpunk world with vast interior settings as well as a surprisingly large portion of a city exterior. The level of detail was astounding, especially given the size of the game world.
There are advantages to the space that a company can get when they are building outside of a city. Escape Time Le Mans clearly understood how to make the most of that extra room.

Gameplay
Escape Time Le Mans’ Alpha District was a sprawling escape room with a moderate level of difficulty.
Core gameplay revolved around searching, observing, making connections, and solving puzzles.
Some of the puzzles required figuring out how to use whatever we found to our advantage, with out-of-the-box thinking.
Analysis
➕ The world was impressive from the start, and it just expanded as we played. Each set was unique, while still part of the same cyberpunk universe. They were all exquisitely detailed — not necessarily beautiful, but appropriately grim or bright, and always weathered realistically.
➕ In each act of the game, the puzzles were themed to the environment. They were well-clued, often through environmental details. As long as we were observant, gameplay flowed smoothly.
➖ The intro dragged. It was unnecessarily long and boring.
➖ While our communication method was thematic, it was a bit annoying.
➕ Early on, Alpha District justified the role of a character well, and we worked with them as we got comfortable with the environment and the gameplay. Later, while the actors were not a constant presence, their scenes added lateral thinking to the puzzles.
➕ We enjoyed standard escape room-style puzzles that make use of unusual props and were tactile in nature. But better yet, many puzzles rewarded creative, out-of-the-box thinking. After nibbling on these, we were often baffled that our insane ideas actually worked.
➖ When we played, there was a puzzle that we couldn’t solve. We found out later that nobody can solve it. While it was a neat idea, it was also a broken puzzle. If it’s not working, it needs to go.
➕ The sound design elevated the experience.
➕ Escape Time Le Mans has an affinity for destructible props. In Alpha District, these were serious, sizable game elements. They were pretty clearly clued and in-world, although after chewing on a solution for a while, we decided to radio back to HQ for confirmation before taking action.
➕ In Alpha District we repeatedly felt like badass movie heroes.
➖ The finale didn’t land. We seemed to be pushing a lot of buttons for no real payoff. We were also offered the opportunity to make a decision, but not one we cared about. Alpha District hadn’t made us invested enough in the characters. Our exciting adventure had eclipsed their wants and needs.
🚩 One scene raised safety concerns. While a performer was clearly there as a precaution, and we were instructed where to be, Escape Time Le Mans trusted us to handle props that need not have been part of the game. There were other options to get this effect, and this company has the skills to build differently. Was the moment explosive? Sure. Was the risk worth the reward? No.
➕ We appreciated the integrated team photo.
Tips For Visiting
- When we arrived, nobody greeted us in the lobby. There were instructions for how to begin. We aren’t sure if this is typical, but if you encounter this, know that there are bathrooms down both hallways. (We didn’t know this, and wasted a lot of time.)
- This game is available in French and English, with a €30 surcharge to play in English.
- Le Mans is accessible by train from Paris. You can buy tickets online through SNCF, the French train operator. Check the train times and make sure you can get a train back to Paris. The escape room is about 15-20 minutes by Uber, from the train station.
- You can buy a sandwich or salad at Boulangerie Ange, which is less than a 5-minute walk away.
- 👖We recommend knee pads. Consider these escape pants.
