MindMaze is a company that means a lot to me. They were the first great escape room company that I visited when I had started playing in 2014, and all these years later, it’s wonderful to see how they have evolved. Galactic Pioneers represented a huge leap in their technical abilities.

This spaceship repair game opened with an extremely strong and dramatic sequence that led into a room that was filled with tons of beautiful, thematic, and engaging puzzles. It felt like a puzzle playground, and all that it was missing was a centerpiece in the middle of the room to pull everything together, and make the space feel a little less cavernous.
The finale, while delivering exactly what it was supposed to, also felt like it wanted to be more. It wasn’t bad, but it was also the weakest portion of the game, and I can imagine that space doing more.
Overall, I loved Galactic Pioneers and my whole experience at MindMaze in general. There’s a joy in this company that feels wonderfully unusual.

Story
We had been cryogenically frozen aboard the ship, The Galactic Pioneer. The ship’s mission was to colonize a distant planet. Unfortunately the journey hit some snags, and we had been unfrozen early to ensure that the ship and the rest of the crew could carry on.

Setting
Galactic Pioneers presented a Star Trek-style space ship with sleek lines and colorful interfaces. It looked the part, and leaned into set-based interactions that evoked the space-faring environment.
At the beginning of the game, Galactic Pioneers created a palpable ambiance that really sucked us into the world. The ship felt large, relevant, and alive.
In the mid- and late-game, Galactic Pioneers used the set to create a collection of dynamic puzzle stations to lean into the sci-fi and ship control elements.

Gameplay
MindMaze’s Galactic Pioneers was a standard escape room with a moderate level of difficulty.
Core gameplay revolved around observing, making connections, and solving puzzles. Many of puzzles were “science-y” in tone, when they weren’t classically spaceship in style.

Analysis
➕ We’ve woken up from a lot of cryogenically frozen sleeps in our years… and we appreciated a setup that excluded the classic “pods.” In this way, the gameplay felt more dynamic and team-oriented from the get-go.
➕ The puzzles were tactile throughout the Galactic Pioneers. In the second act especially, the props were chonky and satisfying to handle. They also felt science-y, in a good way, with some impressive chemistry-ish magic.
➕ We got to take a classic action movie unlocking action, and it felt on point.
➕/➖ The sleek set design made a strong early impression. Later on, while the props looked good and the vibe carried, the set felt a bit too empty, and it didn’t do as strong world-building as we know MindMaze is capable of.
➖ In the third act, the game design started to feel repetitive. There was opportunity to do more with the space and the gameplay within it.
➖ The conclusion was abrupt. We would have appreciated a progress meter, creating a build-up to a more impactful finale.
