Deep inside the bowels of Paris is the City of Martyrs, a world inhabited by cloaked characters and filled with various strange businesses and homes. This overworld provided the setting for The Full Experience (two connected escape rooms: The Magician of Paris and The Funhouse) and The Ultimate Experience (three connected escape rooms: The Magician of Paris and The Funhouse and The Taxidermist).

The City of Martyrs was one of the most impressive aspects of our visit to Deep Inside. It had a meticulously designed set. While we didn’t interact with this overworld much through the gameplay, it looked and felt more realistic than many individual escape rooms do. It had a sense of place. Furthermore, the cloaked characters who lived in The City of Martyrs had personalities. Their scenes – both with us and with each other – gave this world more depth and made us care more deeply about the places we visited there.

On our way to the City of Martyrs, the rules of engagement were presented in a humorous manner. This transition worked well to separate the City of Martyrs from Deep Inside’s storefront lobby. The company is precious about how players enter and leave the City of Martyrs, at times to the players’ detriment, as it prohibits a quick trip to the bathroom or easy access to belongings stored in the lobby. We fully endorse the separation of worlds, but we would have appreciated if these comforts could have been more accessible.

In The Full Experience, teams transition directly from The Magician of Paris into The Funhouse. This worked exceptionally well. As we took our MacGuffin from The Magician of Paris out of the City of Martyrs, we were thwarted… in a way that led us directly into The Funhouse with a linked mission goal.

In The Ultimate Experience, teams then transition directly into The Taxidermist. We found this transition to be clunkier because the gameplay goals didn’t flow as seamlessly. Also, play stopped for additional rules and backstory, but not for a bio break. At the time we played, The Ultimate Experience wasn’t a bookable option on Deep Inside’s website. (If a team booked all three games in one day, Deep Inside would reach out if they had the schedule availability to provide the connected experience.) Deep Inside was still iterating on how to connect all three games in a way that is comfortable for players, physically and conceptually, and we expect The Ultimate Experience to continually improve. We still wholeheartedly recommend it for experienced players. You’ll get extra scenes in the City of Martyrs, which were all a delight.

We especially loved visiting the bar inside the City of Martyrs. It had great shtick. The cloaked bartender had a myriad of amusing options to extend play and bring the place to life. They were one of the best parts of our visit to Deep Inside. The more comfortable we got interacting, the more they gave back.

Given the length of the connected experience, Deep Inside has to contend with more exhausted teams. To that end, we recommend that Deep Inside better player-proof their technology. In each of their three experiences, we accidentally interacted with something when it shouldn’t have been accessible yet (or in one case, ever – it wasn’t for players). These upgrades would help them deliver more consistent experiences for everyone.

The Magician of Paris, The Funhouse, and The Taxidermist are all distinct experiences. They do not need to be played back-to-back. They do not even need to be played in order. But The Full Experience and The Ultimate Experience offer more than the sum of the individual games. Deep Inside has created an exceptional, interactive world with the City of Martyrs, and for players with the time (and the stamina) to discover all it has to offer, you absolutely should.
