I first visited Vortex Escapes last year to play their first game Apophis, a creative puzzle-centric mission which tasked players with saving Earth from an incoming asteroid. We started off in an old-school science lab, and the setting really took off from there. The physical build felt somewhat dated, but fantastic puzzles are timeless. During our visit, we heard construction sounds from upstairs, and I made a mental note to return to Vortex as soon as their next creation was open.

Thankfully I didn’t have to wait long. Intracorpus was a staggeringly ambitious creation with a playful theme. Much like in Apophis, we witnessed a powerful contrast between the mundane and the fantastical, starting off in a clinical hospital waiting room before soon making our way intra-corpus.

Where Apophis focused more on puzzles, Intracorpus embraced a broader style of play, while still featuring some lovely puzzles. Both games demonstrated a clear understanding that the memories formed in escape rooms result from the quality and creativity of our interactions. It’s not enough for something to just look beautiful or impressive. Interacting with unique props and large set pieces in the coolest possible ways is really what takes things to the next level.

And oh goodness, did Intracorpus deliver. Throughout the majority of the gameplay, we were greeted with utterly delightful interactions, playful and impressive transitions, strange and surreal environments, and a strong sense of whimsy.

I’ve only ever encountered one other escape room with a similar theme to Intracorpus, and it is also located near Barcelona: Can Bruna’s Cellular Odyssey. While these two fantastic experiences overlap on the surface, their specific styles were actually quite different. Where Cellular Odyssey focused on puzzles, story, and emotion, Intracorpus stood out for a sprawling set and playful physical interactions. Both experiences had their unique strengths, and I loved seeing another take on such an unusual theme.

For escape room enthusiasts visiting Spain, Intracorpus is a one-of-a-kind adventure that is not to be missed. While the space itself is vast, we recommend playing with a smaller team for a more hands-on experience.

Story

We paid a routine visit to Hospital Corpus, which was known for its groundbreaking advances in medical technology. However, we soon found the hospital under lockdown as a lethal virus broke out, putting the legendary Dr. Xetrov in critical condition. Thankfully one of the hospital’s newest innovations might be of use to save his life. The only way forward was by going in ourselves…

Setting

Intracorpus was set at a pretty normal hospital. A plainly decorated waiting room included a vending machine, a stack of magazines, and a fake plant in the corner. As the experience progressed, we encountered a labyrinth of increasingly elaborate and fantastical environments that contrasted sharply with the opening aesthetic.

Gameplay

Vortex Escapes’ Intracorpus was a standard escape room with a moderate level of difficulty.

Core gameplay revolved around solving puzzles, making connections, communicating, and having a ton of fun.

Analysis

➕ Intracorpus balanced play, puzzles, and adventure. Above all else, it consistently placed players at the center of the action, offering a delightful bounty of fun interactions and nonstop reveals.

➕/➖ There was a strong contrast of the mundane — a clinical hospital waiting room — with the fantastical, making the Magic School Bus-esque adventure that followed all the more zany by comparison. However, the more mundane opening act lasted longer than necessary to pull off this contrast.

➕ The theming of the set was incredible, with a wide variety of surreal and playful environments. These were linked by countless creative transitions, which were equally fun in their own right. The experience just kept getting cooler and cooler.

❓ I’m unsure of the physical integrity of much of the build. It looked amazing, but was already showing some signs of wear and tear relatively early on in its existence. Some of this honestly contributed positively to the chosen aesthetic, yet I hope that Vortex Escapes will be able to keep up with maintenance over time to ensure that this special body stays in good health.

➕/➖ A creative communication challenge really put our brains to the test, offering multiple possible paths to success. However, one side was inherently more interesting than the other.

💙 I loved a puzzle that elegantly utilized something we already had with us.

➕ Each new set reveal was propelled forward by the additional excitement of realizing the awesome way in which we could interact with it. This was especially the case for a large sculptural piece which gave all players a shot at greatness. This interaction didn’t just look cool; it also felt epic for everyone involved.

➕ The entire experience leaned into humor, and one interaction especially made us the butt of all jokes. It was silly, stupid, and immature, yet it made us giggle and fit the theme perfectly.

➖ Intracorpus was fun up through the end, yet it lacked an actual ending. There were so many individually amazing components throughout this experience which all thematically fit together. However, there was no real meta-mechanic or capstone to the story which had been established at the start.
