If some escape room designers got particularly drunk one evening and woke up to find they’d created a new escape room, it might resemble Very Bad Night. This Hangover-inspired experience looked less like the glossy Vegas benders of film and more like the actual aftermath of a wild night that took place in your friend’s low-budget flat. It was silly, raunchy, and ridiculous.

Very Bad Night centered around the naturally emergent puzzle that accompanies many a bad hangover: what the hell actually happened last night?

Throughout each stage of the game, we were tasked with piecing together our timeline using a variety of details in the environment. This structure supported a detailed plot, even if the clue structure itself had no real narrative justification. The puzzles were varied and environmentally thematic, building into some satisfying tactile solves and layered deductions.

The gameplay also involved a significant amount of searching, making this game well suited for medium-to-larger teams. The apartment was properly trashed, and there was plenty of leftover debris from the party to sort through (though nothing was unfairly hidden.) Overall, this aesthetic felt spot on for an out-of-hand college party, though some later sets had experienced perhaps a bit too much partying over the years and would benefit from freshened party decorations.

Story

We woke up surrounded by signs of a wild party, but with no memory of what had happened the night prior.

Setting

Very Bad Night was set in a trashed living room, with a DJ setup, stripper pole, and an ocean of empty alcohol bottles.

One Hour’s Very Bad Night was a standard escape room with a moderate level of difficulty.

Core gameplay revolved around extensive searching, making connections, and piecing together story details.

Analysis

➕ In Very Bad Night, the story was the gameplay, and the gameplay was the story. This was not an emotional or experiential story; it was an intricate series of plot points. In each act, we gathered cards recounting events from the night prior, and each chapter’s capstone comprised of piecing together these events in the correct order. This gameplay structure fit the theme well.

➕/➖ The set was appropriately trashed, with empty beer bottles and various party costuming. We spent much of the opening act cleaning up after our past selves in a scrappy living room. The sets got zanier as the experience progressed, yet there was room for more detail and polish throughout.

➕ A thematic hint system added to the party, prompting some interactions that would be most fun when players fully commit to the bit.

➕ Very Bad Night didn’t take itself too seriously. It leaned into a wide range of ridiculous humor, props, and shticks that come with the Hangover-esque genre.

➖ A final metapuzzle nicely tied together the story in theory, but in practice the clue structure was a bit too convoluted.
