As an aspiring AFOL (Adult Fan of LEGO), I was instantly charmed by the opening set of L.A. Confidential: the break room of Lock Academy featured a kaleidoscopic pedestal of assorted LEGO bricks in its center. A matrix of LEGO minifigs adorned one wall, and an oversized minifig head watched us from another corner. It’s clear that the creators of Lock Academy and I have some shared interests.

The nerdy decor didn’t stop there. This space was packed with an assortment of video games, mementos from the Academy’s various student groups, and maps of the school to help newer students find their way around. In its eclectic whimsy, this break room was effective in furthering Lock Academy’s world-building as a school for detectives, complete with all the elements — both mundane and fantastical — you’d expect to encounter at such an institution.

Our visit to the break room, however, was anything but a relaxing respite. Lock Academy villain Jim Key had lured us there with an insidious package, and in doing so, set off a chain of events that forced us to infiltrate Lock Academy’s secret archives on his behalf. While L.A. Confidential started off somewhat silly and cozy, it later took a sharp turn toward sleek spy thriller. The contrast was phenomenal, and it kept us on our toes until the final seconds of the experience.

The gameplay in L.A. Confidential was fun and action-packed, simultaneously guiding us to explore the environment, further the mission at hand, and also learn some Lock Academy lore along the way. With a variety of puzzles and minigames, there was something for everyone to do. We enjoyed the challenge of playing L.A. Confidential as a duo, and while certain elements are adapted to team size, the first act especially had lots to do in parallel, making this game well suited for a medium-size team.

Alongside Revolt at the Lock and The Examination, all three experiences at Lock Academy’s newer Sebastopol location are playful, polished, and thoroughly full of character, making Lock Academy an essential stop on any escape room enthusiasts’ or aspiring detectives’ Paris itineraries.

Lock Academy’s L.A. Confidential was a standard escape room with a moderate level of difficulty.

Core gameplay revolved around solving puzzles, making connections, and communicating.

Analysis

➕ Lock Academy welcomed us into the world of L.A. Confidential without asking us to be anyone other than ourselves. As the scenario progressed, the stakes also increased, and a crescendo of energy swelled into the final moments of the experience.

➕ At first, the set design impressed us by not trying to impress us. Lock Academy’s break room wasn’t flashy, yet all the small, colorful details told a clear story of the students who inhabited this space. In contrast, a later set impressed us by doing a lot with a little, amplifying a sleek design to have an even bigger wow effect.

➕ The gameplay fit the environments in which it was situated. In the break room, we felt like students playing on our off time. In a more secret location, our interactions guided us to move around the space more like secret agents. There was a fun variety of puzzles, tasks, and minigames.

➕ A layered puzzle used a character to extend our perception of Lock Academy. Notably, no locations beyond our field of view seemed cooler than where we explored directly ourselves, ensuring there was no accidental FOMO.

➖ A bit of social hacking was simpler than necessary, and it could have thematically benefited from some extra play.

➕ L.A. Confidential was successful in repeating the same trick twice, with the help of careful lighting and thoughtful pacing.

➕/➖ As the intensity picked up, the gameplay also scaled relative to team size. We learned that there were some elegant customizations to adapt the final challenges relative to performance. Regardless of team size or performance, there was also an opportunity to add some variation to this task, rather than having the difficulty emerge from simply doing the same thing multiple times in sequence.
